critique this setup
hi guys i bought the TD04 turbo kit on these forums and hope to have it in on 1990 NA6 roadster within the month. I will keep it at the stock boost of 7psi and very sure that i will NOT want to go more than that. Car isnt a daily driver just something to have some cheap fun in. I bought it in Japan when i was living there so it has sentimental value and will just be garaged if i ever stop using it.
kit will eventually comprise of
TD04 9B turbo which i know is small
starion over the radiator intercooler
2.5inch exhaust
NB 1.8 injectors when i find some
NO BOV
wideband 02 sensor
I do not want to get an aftermarket ecu for the small power upgrade that im looking for so im tempted to go for the jaycar DFA for fuelling and possibly the jaycar kit for the ignition too.
fuel pressure regulator??? any suggestions, hopefully something i can pick up locally.
02 clamp - is this really needed for the factory ecu?
Any help would be appreciated and before anyone lays it into me i have been reading like mad on all the forums but want an Australian perspective. I know of all the parts readily available from the states but at the end of the day i'd rather keep my money in Oz.

You need a BOV unless your car is an automatic.
Without one, when the throttle closes on gear changes, the pressure goes backwards towards the turbo. This stalls the turbo which can damage it.

the actuator on that turbo was 6psi.
bov is not necessary but nice to have.
the 1.8 injectors will do fine if your worried about af ratio take to dyno and get them to do a quick log with their wideband (should cost around $60) if its not too lean your golden.
You may need a fpr I never ran one but I never used my wideband until I got megasquirt.

I would have thought you'd need a wideband regardless?
If you're changing the AFR (via standalone ECU or piggybacks) you'll need to know what the changes are actually doing.
No point installing the DFA then sitting there and making a pure guess and saying "umm....... add fuel? let's just randomly select 6 as a number to input"
Unless you do it the old fashioned way and after each drive check the spark plugs to see how it's running?

i will definitely get a wideband. Im not used to tuning my cars this way, on my stock FD i just chucked in a powerfc and it netted 197rwkw so i left it.
as for the BOv i think they are wank and id rather not draw too much attention to the car which is already hard. I dont want the extra plumbing to close it back into the intake too.

A BOV is a fundamental item. Without one, at the least, it will slow your turbo (making your low boost set up even slower).
It's not a wank item - every factory manual turbo has one. Just plumb the vent back into the inlet thus eliminating/minimising noise.

You need to set static timing to 6 degrees and run 11.5:1 afrs or richer in boost. A jaycar DFA isnt really recommended but it will work. You shoiuld also adjust the spring in the afm to help add extra fuel. using the wideband all along to check its at least 13:1 at 0psi down to 11.5 to one at full boost.
A BOV isnt 100% necessary but it will quieten down the car and help with performance on gearshifts.
Greddy kits are asthmatic at the best of times.
I guarantee you will want more.
It will spool at 4000rpm or later and run out of puff at 6500rpm.

Dont forget it wont have enough fuel stock so injectors or (better) use a fuel pressure reg.

thanks for the help guys. ive decided that i will probably use the jaycar DFA for fuelling and get the bipes acu for the ignition as its a simple unit that seems to do the job well.
the other question i have is the kit comes with a td04-9b turbo which is from a very old mitsubishi colt its the smallest of the TD04 turbos, it has the triangle exhaust flange, does anyone know if the other triangle flanged TD04 models fit (wrx etc)? I really hate how the TD turbos are named, there seems to be a whole host of exhaust housings available, greddy kit uses a garret flange ffs.

i just bought a greddy emanage blue with the na6 harness to do the piggybacking.. was $340

Better than a DFA by far, but only 150 bucks short of a proper ecu (a megasquirt).

kit is being installed right now. have dummied up the manifold and turbo but i cannot see how i will run the hotside cooler piping. i have AC and PS and there is crap everywhere on that side of the engine bay. the starion intercooler wont even fit because the AC canister is in the way.
