Rear brake adjuster stuck. Sliders pins OK.

Postby aka_juffa » Sun Apr 29, 2012 5:30 pm

Somewhere in its previous life the passenger side rear brake adjuster on my NA8 become stuck (seized, jammed, stuffed) and someone then managed to round out the allen key head on the adjuster.

Along I came and try to adjust the rear brakes and find the above. I have removed that rear brake from the car and stripped it down. Slider pins are fine. Seals not broken/split, but I will replace them all. I was able to rotate the brake piston and screw it off the adjusting screw in the body of the caliper and removed it.

I have not been able to remove the brake adjuster. It is stuck tight, I can not turn it, nor can I withdraw it from the rear of the caliper. Just to be clear, it is this part that is stuck.

Below is a break down of a rear brake. The adjusting screw is the shown just to the left of centre. The splines of the adjuster mesh with the splines of the adjusting screw which then moves the piston in or out.

The adjusting screw in the caliper body is held by a circlip. If I remove the circlip and pull out the adjusting screw will I be able to remove the adjuster? Is there any other way of removing the adjuster?

I'm now going to have a search of the big forum as well.

Thanks in anticipation.

I was told via the big forum that removing the adjuster screw should allow me to adjuster out. However while tryling to remove the circlip from inside the caliper body I realised that the hand brake actuator arm is frozen. I knew that the hand brake did not operate on that wheel, and I thought it was just going to be a matter of adjustment....now I know the real reason.

Time to give my favourite wrecker a call and see how much he wants for a caliper.

Edit:...just got of the phone $165 for a 2nd hand caliper.....about what I paid 7 years ago for the same part.
