who uses kumho's?
hey all,
So done some research on other forums and stuff, people have said the v70a's are quicker thasn r888's but dont last as long.
Im also considering going the V710's as the price is right!
anyone had any MX5 experience with the V70a's and or the V710's?
Ive heard some people have had their kumho's delaminate quicker?

Hey Chris,
Last trackday, the top drivers in my group ran Kumho v70s, I was running star specs along with one other fella.
Deen (hamster) ;) loves his tyres, he is running the 225/50 r15. His experience is, the more they wear the faster he got.

I highly recommend them! Ran them on my old skyline, look forward to putting some on my 5.
When I bought my car it had nitto nt01s on it, which were great but illegal everywhere but track days.

I have had 225/45/15 kumho's up untill yesterday. They have been excellent, long lasting tyre. I bought them 2 years ago, and they have been on 4 different cars and set some very fast lap times. But last weekend they just didn't seem to be gripping like they used to. But you would expect that from a tyre that has done as much work as those. The previous track day they set a new club record and got the 2nd fastest time on the day outright. Only reason i didn't replace them with another set this time was price. I was quoted $1500 for a set. Instead i bought nto1's to try. And at a fraction of the price - $865......

I do... KU31s (195/50/15) on the street..
and v700s (225/45/15s) on the track. They're my first r-spec tyre and I've been very happy with them, although obviously, I don't have experience with any other r-spec tyre. Best to ask Hellmun. He's basically The God of All Things Black And Round..
I like the tyres, they're progressive, and weren't the surprise on the limit I was told r-specs can be be. Most times I've dríven the car, it was in some non-optimal setup and I still didn't have any issues with its 'progressivity'. Thankfully, I haven't flat-spotted them yet. It's only in the last two / three sessions that I've been pushing them though..
On the track, they warm up very quickly (1/2 lap?) and are good for quite long sprints, say 20 laps without going off. I haven't gone longer than 20 laps without having to stop to take a leak, so can't say how they will be for longer.
I estimate a set will last about 8 trackdays, and it will be down to the wire by then. You'll have to rotate them to get the most life out of them. Mine have about 1 or max 2 days in them.. That means about $4/- a lap for the tyres... Wise heads told me not to calculate that, but now that I have, I'm seriously reconsidering the costs of the casual thrills I get from my occasional dabbling in m/sport...
One more thing... Kumho don't make the 225/45/15s anymore... apparently there was wasn't enough demand for the size, so now they only provide 225/50/15s... For me, that will mean, I will have to raise the car, as it will surely rub under heavy brakes > alignment > silly gap on streeties, so it's getting a bit much... OTOH, better gearing..
If you _can_ get 225/45/15s please let me know. I need at least 1, perhaps 2 and possibly 4 .. well, 1 to replace the front-left which is BALD.

V710 are not street legal in Australia. They're fine if you're allowed to use slicks in your class.
Lots of guys using the V70As on MX-5s at supersprints and club trackdays. Kumho are the name rights sponsor of the CAMS NSW Supersprint Championship. I haven't tried V70As because can't get them in 185/60R14. However everyone complains that they wear very quickly and unevenly. The central half of the tyre wears quicker than the outer shoulder. The guts at Peak say you should use higher pressures than are usual for R-specs because they have a different sidewall construction. Another factor is that V70As come in soft and medium compounds. Choose soft if you want quickest lap times but don't expect them to last more than one meeting. To be honest, from what I've seen of them and considering they're no cheaper than RE55s, I'm very happy to stick with Japanese R-specs.

Ive got street tyres and rims so if I get the V710's thats all good. Im not worried about class at supersprints as I do more door to door racing than sprints now and the guys Im up against are on slicks anyway.

I've ran both the Kumho and the R888's on my race car.
In the dry, the Kumho is better without a doubt. In the wet the R888 is better (because of the more open grooves in the tyre)

oh ok, I figured when Constable Care sees "for competition use only" written on the sidewall he would pull out his little book and start writing it up.
Regardless of Nittos compliance, Id reccomend Kumhos as its a far better supported product, The guys at Fsport in Arndell Park really know their stuff, and have helped me ALOT in the past. And the product quality is top notch.

NT01s are DOT approved...
I thought DOT only applied to the USA? And they're pretty relaxed about what can get approved for road use.
