box is currently on the floor ready to go back in, with a new clutch bolted up, rear main and g/box front oil seal installed.
when i pulled the tailshaft, a small amount of fluid came out of the center of the hollow stub of the shaft itself.
now i've drained and re-filled the gearbox oil, and as soon as the rear of the box is even 1cm off the ground, oil pours out.
i ran down and bought a new seal that appears to be different to the one that's in there.
the installed seal looks like this
is the tailshaft supposed to form the seal once installed? or is my rear oil seal just plain toast?
thanks!

rear g/box oil seal, does the tail shaft make the seal?

Yeah, the tail shaft forms the seal. Without it all the oil will just run freely out the back of the gearbox.
