Thanks all for the offers of help.
Got the sump plug off, replaced with a magnetic sump plug. All good.
Putting the oil filter back on :shock:

Could not do it from the top no matter how hard i tried, did a lot better sliding under the car and going through the wheel well. Finally got it on.

Spark plugs next after i get a ratchet set.

Cameron, I you want to make it easier, use a filter relocation kit..of which, ahem, I'll have a few more available in the next couple of weeks.

Wiztec, re oil filters.. Ryco Z436 from Supacheap do seem cheaper than buying the original from Mazda (Part 86Y1-14-302AUS) BUT the (2) gasket washes are NOT included with the Ryco product and need to be bought seperately, so keep your old ones to help identify the correctly sized new ones. Apparently, its VERY important to fit NEW gasket washes whenever the oil filter is renewed. Cheers from slowpoke

Buy a workshop manual and an owners manual and check out your library. Also easy to buy publications on line. Sourcing on cost alone is not a good process.

The gasket washes are sump plug washes!

it is not urgent that you replace these all the time. but it is good practice to do so. over time they become flattened and misshaped.

as for say ryco don't supply this washer with their oil filters. no brand supplies a sump plug washer when you buy a oil filter. it is a totally seperate car part.

Tks for clarification SP - didn't realise sump plug washer was supplied with the OEM oil filter.

Sorry can you guys clarify? Are we talking about a washer for the oil pan sump plug? If so, i did put in a new one as i bought a new sump plug (though the previous owner didnt have a washer on it at all..)
Does the oil filter have a washer?

You're all good, wiztek. There's no washer on the oil filter. The above discussion is only about the sump plug washer, which you have replaced.

The oil filter has a rubber seal.

Which you are supposed to oil up before you put it back on.. I also just put my oil filters on hand tight so you can take it off easier next time. Been doing it like that for 16 years every 5000ks no probs.

SNAPON brand sockets drive on the flat of the nut/bolt rather than the points. They work on stripped nuts.

+1 to that. I've avoided over tightening them because ive been worried about deforming the seal.

On my old rally car I had a hose clamp with a pin that I would tighten onto the filter and that would only allow it to spin a bit before the pin would act as a stop but that was a ford engine with a bit of a reputation of vibrating off oil filters ...
