Re: mitch_f1's mariner NA6
Now i have seen the video.
Its fine and 100% normal.
The leak will be one of the 3 easily replaceable 6 dollar seals every diff has.
No biggy, its all ok.

Re: mitch_f1's mariner NA6
Sorry to bug you, but if it's a VLSD then when I turn one wheel would the other wheel turn in the same or opposite direction? Mine turns in the same direction? Also would the part number for these seals be the same for an open diff vs a VLSD diff?

The bung just leads to the sump.
Its often used a a turbo oil return.
VLSDs suck ass.
They are all almost useless by now.

The part number for the seals is written on the seal itself, sight it, then go to a bearing shop and pay 6 dollars not 25 from repco.

Made use of the 20% off storewide at Supercheap and got some supplies and new wiper blades
Put the hard top spoiler back on, but it is plagued again with one corner lifting up, so I put an extra bit of tape under it and also heated it up with a heat gun and held firm pressure on it, and it is looking a bit better

Re: mitch_f1's mariner NA6
what did you use to stick the spoiler to the top?
I have a roll of that 3M VHB tape...the stuff that comes standard with the GV parts etc etc.
you are welcome to try it, it sticks like nothing else

Re: mitch_f1's mariner NA6
So I was getting all psyched after grilling Dann about what I was gonna be doing. Get under the car, and while I am working out what size nut it is (26mm to anyone who wants to know), I realise that the bloody thing is less than finger tight!!!!!! Nut I'm talking about:
The dilemma then was to get 160nM of torque into the nut (as specified in all the manuals I looked at)!!!! For reference sake, that is the highest torque my torque wrench goes to. Your suspension bolts have a torque of 90something (from memory). So it's a lot!! To top it off we had a blackout last night...fun times, so I did it in the dark (had a head torch). What I ended up doing was putting handbrake on (useless), and putting in two random bolts and jamming a screwdriver between the two, and levering against the PPF while I was pushing against the LR wheel with my back. Hard to describe, and I didn't take pics, but it worked, so I'm happy.
While under I noticed that my fuel filter was literally just sitting on the plastic protective plate; no bracket anywhere!!!! On closer inspection the plastic clip holding the hard line had also broken, which is why I'd not noticed it before (I think). So to fix it I used a couple of cable ties, and a wire cable stay as you find on the top of the gearbox (for those who've been there)
Went up today to get some diff oil (went with limslip), to refill the diff. First suprise came while draining the diff; I open the inspection hole and fluid pours out!! Then I open the drain hole and the magnet has a good 5mm of filings on it!!
Filling was the pits. My new least favourite fluid is now diff oil; that stuff is thicker than tar!! I had the idea of just letting it pour in with gravity and a long tube, boy was I mistaken!!!! Ended up squeezing the bottle for like 30mins trying to get the 600mL into the diff. Filled it up, let the excess drain away while I went and watched an episode of Seinfeld. The stuff looks like smurf blood by the way, which was kinda cool. PLEASE NOTE: no smurfs were harmed in the making of that comment
On Sunday I had a visit from fellow forum member popopocky to swap his electric windows for my manual ones. Took us a decent amount of time due to the dynamat on his car, but we got there eventually. While he was putting the manual ones in his car I started by rebuilding the electrics to get them back up to speed (they were a snails pace in his car)
The other hurdle I had, and my first WTF was I thinking moment, is removing the silicone from my passenger door, which yours truly thought would be a good idea to re-adhere the plastic with..WRONG!! For all you kids playing for the first time at home, DO NOT DO WHAT I DID
Found some silicone remover (stuff is nasty) and let it do its stuff. It did okay but I still had to do a lot of scraping with my thumb (which is now ridiculously sore). Still residual left, but not nearly as bad
For the passenger side I was smart enough to buy another plastic sheet in my order from MX5 parts ages ago. Simply line up the holes at the top, bolt the handle in, and glue away. This time I used the proper stuff; butyl mastic
Driver side I wasn't so smart; I didn't buy another sheet, and I ripped up the old one and threw it out. So I had to first remove all the old black mastic (white spirit works wonders here), and then cut a template in some builders plastic. Looks ugly, but is fully functional
Also, found the box for dads steering wheel
And that ladies and germs is what my weekend of study for my mid-semesters looked like....

Re: mitch_f1's mariner NA6
So how does it drive? No more humming, that's for sure. It has also gotten rid of a lot of what I thought was flywheel chatter, but obviously not!!! Now I just have a clunking sound when in reverse at a low speed and if I depress the clutch fast. Have to head to mania tomorrow on another matter, might ask Dave while I'm there. Also, am unsure how much damage the loose nut might have done, so just gonna drive it around a bit and see what happens. Finally, and interestingly, the wheels now turn in opposite directions when both are off of the ground, and are very tight to turn...?
