seeking advice maybe some tips and tricks too (budget turbo)

Postby slimx » Fri Apr 06, 2012 4:49 pm

I've decided to begin very slowly on turbo-ing my daily NB8B.

Heres my current shopping list.
  • Clutch - DONE
  • Turbo Manifold
  • Turbocharger - something that can hold 8-10
  • Injectors to suit
  • Intercooler front mount
  • Boost Gauge
  • ECU - adaptronic or haltech
  • New exhaust (all the way..) (+ high flow cat)

------
This is the first time ive ever added a turbo to car without a turbo so help me out here guys. i am a NOOB!

Regarding the MANIFOLD
Struggling to find for a decent price.
My local fabricator told me he wont make ONE he can custom make if i buy 3+ :S

Im looking at buying one off an SE or SP that way i know it'll clear the air condition. So no issues there.

OBX RACING makes a set i can get for a great price
a20792912edfeb2c4c35c9_m.JPG

Im just scared of fitment issues not of the product braking, it says 97 - 05 (it might be for another motor..)

------

Now the TURBO
I can get a second hand S15, S14, RX7 FD turbo's off many friends for nothing. Ofcourse second hand isnt good but its something that isnt hard to upgrade later on down the track.

-------

Injectors
There cheap anyway just going to go retail, or maybe through my own suppliers see what they can do for me..
I was curious though if 350cc is enough? or maybe TOO much?

-------

Intercooler
I plan to go through my suppliers regarding the intercooler, You guys would know more then me though so how big should i go? Is there anything specific i should look for in an intercooler.. etc?

-------

Boost Gauge
I am going with a DEFI :) no one can tell me otherwise unless you can show me something as or more sexy!

-------

ECU

Stuck between HALTEC & ADAPTRONIC

Why HALTEC
I know it, used it before, BUT I HAVE NEVER TRIED ANYTHING ELSE to say its the best. Recommended by an MX5 Race Car Builder

Why Adaptronic
Recommended by MX5MANIA, a tad bit cheaper then the haltec, it seems to be patrially BUILT for the MX5 NB8B

I want your opinions and WHY please.

---------

Please only reply if you can contribute. No stupid ass comments.
NitroDann - we spoke before about this but i deleted the pm lol sorry if i asked a question that you've already answered for me i was dying for that pm today couldnt find it anywhere -.-

I would be worried about running a cheap manifold like that, don't waste your money as it will more than likely crack within a couple months then you will have to waste more money fixing the problem. Get yourself a nice cast manifold Begi/FM/Avo manifold and you won't have any issues. Also what are you going to do about the EGR valve? The manifold you get will need a EGR bung in it if you wish to keep it, or you will have to buy a block off plate for the intake manifold.

Have you seen the AVO manifold and dump setup for sale at the moment? In my opinion this setup for $250 is a much better choice compared to that OBX manifold.

Like you said you can get yourself an old second hand T2 flange turbo from a S15/S14, and then replace it once it eventually pops.

Injectors, there is some good info here on other injectors that will fit into your MX5.

Why would you spring for Defi boost gauge and then skimp on the parts that matter? A decent accurate boost gauge can be had for well under $100, and will free up cash to put towards other more important things.

If you want good information go have a look on Miataturbo, there is a wealth of information there. Just don't go asking noob questions without searching first or they'll be on you like white on rice.

If i saw that AVO manifold+dump believe me i would've got it before even posting lol.
I'll buy everything his selling.

With the EGR, I was Thinking of eliminating it.. all together if i can keep it i will, if not its no issue..

The DEFI boost gauge is last on my list :)
for now i have a $20 gauge :) to just get the thing working. I have this weird habbit where.. after i accomplish something ill spoil myself lol. If this works out my spoil will be the DEFI gauge. xD

Green comet u answered most of what i said but didnt recommend an ECU. Which would u go for.. or would u recommend something entirely different?

And regardign injectors.

I can get RX7 injectors for dirt cheap, but they have "primary" & "secondary" injectors. The primary doesnt exactly look like it'll fit so im gonna say its safe to assume that i need just 4 secondary injectors?

Flying Miata also do a manifold that might be worth considering aswell.

We tried a set of reconditioned EV1 style RX-7 injectors in my old car and they were pretty ordinary. The stock NB Densos are EV6 style. I would suggest going anything based on the newer EV14 design should be pretty good.

If you are thinking of hitting the track, then 'budget turbo' is a bit of an oxymoron by the way!

Cheers

Making it yourself, or buying cheaper inferior products as bolt ons are two different things.

You can buy stuff like the se setup that went for under 3000 complete and thats not dodgy at all. Still very budget.

Cmon guys suppose to be recommending sh*t to me here lol. No arguements.

No im not tracking. if it was a track car i wouldnt even set a budget lol.
My goal is 130+ KW small & simple!

If i get this AVO manifold ill be very happy. AVO isnt really a cheapo brand from what i know..
Before anyone thinks of it, Radiator (i already bought a KOYO large radiator) waiting to be installed.

----
Current mods to car
  • CAI
  • HD Clutch
  • 4KG Flywheel
  • Spool Diff (barely any free play) even the preload is locked! (regret it in underground car parks)
  • 2.25" catback
  • 2stage rev limiter (should be okay to sell this off when i get my new ECU)
  • Ultra Racing Strut bars!

Does your flywheel give you grief?

I now run a Koyo radiator, but even the stock radiator will be sufficient!

You should be fine at 6psi to make 130rwkw but I wouldnt recommend pushing that on stock internals.

PLENTY of forum members could give you the injector advice.

Dann I was talking about the associated bits to keep it cool, engine management, beefier clutch, plus extra brake pads, tyres, fuel etc over an N/A MX-5. We both know there's more to it than slapping on a manifold & turbo and calling it a day.
