Can you imagine how hard it would be to do a decent copy of a tire? You'd have to copy all the side markings, the tread, and make it look convincing.
After all that I doubt it would be much cheaper to produce.

Out of interest the Trade Practices Act 1974 (TPA) no longer exists, it has been replaced by the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (CCA) of which Schedule 2 is the Australian Consumer Law (ACL). The ACL replaced the TPA. Section 18 of the ACL is the equivalent to Section 52 of the TPA, that is misleading or deceptive conduct.

Section 18 can not be excluded from any purchase and importantly business is responsible for how its goods and services are perceived by the consumer and can not blame the consumer for their own lack of due diligence. I would suggest getting on the ACCC website possibly contacting them with regard to what has happened. Another way would be to inform the company who owns the trademark to the copies you have and let them know as they may take action under S 18 as well.

Those, or similar, wheels have been around for ages. That suggests the different, though similar, names are not so close as to be actionable, and the advert did not misrepresent the wheels. Money spent on lawyers will be fruitess, unless you count getting legal advice on why you were not ripped off, in law anyway.

Caveat emptor. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

At least they look like the real thing.

Tempe quoted me $275.00 per tyre for 215 x 45 x 18 Potenza's ROE50A for the Liberty GTB. RRP on these tyres are $360.00+
I have a friend that runs TyrePower near my place and his buy price for these from Bridgestone Australian is $268.00 each
They do indeed sell parallel tyres and where they source them from is anybody's guess.
Are they the same quality? Maybe yes, maybe no. I honestly don't know. What I do know is that if I am going to spend that much money I damn well want then real deal. I drive my family around in that car.
I ending up paying $295.00 each from TyrePower.
If nothing else they are a good bargaining chip to get a reasonable price on tyres from other dealers.

In your case Richard, they would have sourced the tyres you where looking at from Bridgestone. There are 2 ways tyres get into the country:-

1) Place of Manufacturer > Ship > Tempe Tyres
2) Place of Manufacturer > Ship > Australian distributer > Transport > State distributer > Transport > Tyre Shop

If each of those hands that a tyre passes wants to make his 10% (example figure) cut, you can see which one will get more expensive by the time the consumer finally buys said products.

That is not bad considering that that TypePower then only made 20 cents per tyre after GST.

OK, fair enough.
I'm pretty sure his price included GST in his buy price so $108.00 profit which is still a good deal for me.
They did however do a wheel alignment for $45.00 which I didn't ask for. So they got me there a little bit as well.

Yeah buy price is with GST sorry. I recently brought some Kumhos for my 3 from the local tyre shop as it worked out a little cheaper than Tempe once shippi9ng and fitting was added to the equation. His buy price was $122 inc GST, and sold them for $132 to me. Plus $55 for an alignment.

I doubt they would be dangerous, or necessarily weak - I have not heard of any horror stories, but then I haven't tested my google-fu on this question. However they will certainly be heavier than a Rays, and the general quality will probably be lower.
