kaaz 1.5 way LSD

Postby chino » Wed Mar 28, 2012 1:33 pm

Hey guys,

Ive got a Kaaz 1.5 way LSD in my Na6 and was wondering how they handle with power upgrades in the future. Just being doing some research but im seeking some personal opinions. Ive seen a few 4.1 conversions (one for sale at the moment) and was thinking if this would benefit me.

The main reason why im considering so is;

a) future power gain aspirations
b) the LSD is a pain to drive on a daily basis. After wearing it in properly, it still tends to shake. It was great at first but can be abit of a head ache haha.

Any opinions are great!

The main thing that dies on MX5s with a bit of power isn;t the diff centre, it's the Crown wheel and pinion.
Especially on the NA6 diff since it's smaller.

I presume you've got an NA8 or NB diff housing + Crown and pinion? (I didn't think Kaaz did a diff for the 1.6)

Going to a different ratio (like 4.1) doesn't change the strength, it just means the car will accelerate quicker/slower depending on ratio.

If you want an LSD without the chattering you could maybe put in a Torsen instead, but be aware they're more suited to circuit driving than drifting etc.

Thats what i was thinking, but ive read in a few places that it was a better option when seeking more power.

Sorry, to clarify, the diff doesnt shake, but have the Kaaz LSD in makes the car vibrate at low speeds, especially in the car park

If it is chattering at low rpms, then change the diff fluids.

how old is the kaaz? if new this will die down over time.

I think I've done a couple of track days and about 10,000 km on the road with mine. I still get looks at the supermarket car park. The car acts like as if it has a locked diff when I park the car the rear tyres squeak and rub a lot im not doing burn out just slowly driving around the car park.

When I reverse out of the drive way and do a little three point turn my neighbours thought my hand brake was still on or something.

1 So what oil do I use to make it less like an LSD and more like an open diff?

2 then what oil do I use when I want to go to do track day to make it more LSD like again?

3 say you still take corners like an Asian driver and you just put your foot into the clutch effectively neutral then you turn the steering wheel and go though the corner Am I "using" the LSD? Like is the LSD working for me? Or does the LSD need power to be delivered to it in order to work.

4 is there a way to make it more open like, can we take the diff out and make it into a 1.2 way LSD?

What LSD is it you have?

What oil are you currently using?

The LSD requires torque being feed into it or out of it to lock up and work properly. That can happen with accel, decel and braking, depressing the clutch without braking will effectively remove the torque and stop the LSD working.

There will be a way of lightening the preload in the LSD too make it looser and stop the wheel chirping but it is a permanent thing unless you want to keep removing it.

I would suggest a series of figures 8 nights in a quiet street and maybe trying different oils to stop it.

You sure? I thought clutch pack diffs were speed sensitive instead our torque sensitive.

Either way coating around with the clutch in isn't a good idea.

It's the costco one from the group buy a while ago.

I think it's 1.5 ways.

The oil is the mt90 that I used when it was an open diff does make it more open diff like?

Yeah I'm trying to learn how to drive properly.

it is the tyres or the diff making all the noise?

Is the oil specifically for a LSD. If not that will be part of your problem, my old car had a clutch pack type LSD either KAAZ or CUSCO and when I first got the car it did the same thing. It was not smooth, lots of noise etc.

First thing I did was do an oil change on the diff, what came out was like black water. What went in was Penrite Limpslip 90 which looks like smurf blood. Instant fix to the problems and resulting in a LSD that actually worked. I ran it for 500kms making sure to take in some hard driving and then dumped it again and refilled with limslip 90.
