Overspray......

As the spray shop seems too busy to do my car,I had another shot with a clay bar, then tried machine polishing it myself. Damn, is the car shiny. Unfortunately, the paint spots are still there..... I suspect this is going to be a big job, regardless of who does it.

A couple of years ago we had a door repainted at work, and in the process a dozen or so cars copped a lot of overspray.

The building management company blamed the painter, the painter blamed the undercoater, ended up in a 4 way legal fight between them and our company for about 4 months. I took my car to hume smash repairs and it was back, better than before the overspray in a week. They cleaned all the overspray off the paintwork, and replaced all of the affected plastic and rubber trim. The bonnet had to resprayed as the paint stuck to that extra well (plus it had many thousands of stone chips)

I paid my insurance excess, which was refunded when one of the painters finally agreed to take the hit.

After screwing around with clay bars and polish etc (still waiting for the aggressive clay bar I ordered), you would not believe what actually removed some paint. Isopropyl alcohol wipes! I just tested a small area, then washed off any alcohol residue and surprise - the dots were basically all gone, with virtually no effort. I believe alcohol is safe to use on car paints, but is quite aggresasive on some others, so I thought it was worth a try. While it took off the lovely wax finish I applied on the weekend, this is a small issue for a much better result. I will still try the aggressive clay bar, but only on the trims, which seem impervious to even the alcohol.

So, this weekend, I will be clay barring the trims (again), alcohol wiping the entire car, then doing a realloy light polish and some waxing! Finally, a result!

Yeah, IPA is fine on paint. I use it all the time to remove polishing residue, diluted with water though.

We buy the Isowipes at work..... I'll have to ask the ladies where we get them from, but they buy them for cleaning telephones etc. Basically, they are a medical wipe soaked with isopropyl.

I believe we were initially oredering them from Officeworks, but now get them from Croft & Co. Apparently our team sell them as a sterile wipe for thermometers etc, plus we use them in the office.

Finally, the overspray is gone. The alcohol did a good job reducing the size of the spots, but they were still there. I ordered an aggressive clay bar (nobody keeps them in stock), which finally arrived about a week ago. I clay barred the entire car and the spots are finally gone. As I have really lost my patience with polishing etc at the moment, I gave it a quick shine with Meguairs wax and decided to forego another full polish. It looks pretty good, as the clay bar didn't leave swirl marks like I expected. I have learnt my lesson..... Always wax your car. If it had a protective layer of wax, the overspray probably would not have stuck to the paintwork, or may have been easier to remove.
