On the blue dyno-queen? or something else?
Do you know much about his cars? I hear about it and see it (the blue with side graphics) every now and again, but never on any club runs or track days.

It's interesting he would choose Haltech over "better" ones given the copious $$ he spends on his car.

I know Steve and the cars reasonably well - He helped me out a lot in the early days of turbocharging my NA, and I still hassal him all the time for bits and pieces as do a few members here.

Im believe he went with Haltech based on the recommendation of his tuner - the tuner has had a lot of input into everything this time around to make sure it all works well together and is drivable and enjoyable - Despite how clean he keeps his Mazdas they both get dríven on the street which is why I mentioned them here.

The blue 'dyno-queen' is no longer blue and has basically had a ground up rebuild. I was in the passenger seat of that car in the mountians just a couple of weeks ago - WOW it's fast, maybe too fast for me.

It's been to a few NSW club events and I believe won Best Modified the year he entered it in concours? He also drove it in street car of the year at least once and I'm sure a bunch of members here have seen it in the flesh at tech days in NSW.

Reading back over that, it sounds a little defensive - Not quite my intention, just showing that his cars do get dríven cause if they didn't and really were dyno queens, then mentioning how nicely they run on any ECU would seem silly.
When results speak for themselves - don't interrupt.

Going back a while, CT was happy with the various Haltechs he used.

Yeah I remember CT having one in his NB, I think he helped work through some NB alternator issues with them.

I have a plug in loom for an SE sitting in my shed, still don't own an SE :frown:
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

CT was indeed the one responsible for this thread after talking to him about the Adaptronic in my car and what he would recommend. Needless to say not only myself but probably another 3 or 4 forum members are in the process of arranging the Haltech 1000's to be fitted shortly to their SP's.Very smart fella CT, and I will probably be using Col from Ricol in Peakhurst to install mine as well. They were the ones who worked with Haltech and Chris on the alternator issue.

Did you get a response on what the advantages of the haltec over the adaptronic are?

Mind if i ask what the price difference was in an SP?

Only stand alone units seem to be more favorable with the tuners I have spoken to.
I also have another guy trying to talk me into a Vipec unit for 4k installed. $2600 for the computer and $1200 for the installation and tune.

It's all getting too complicated for my tiny pee brain.

I think Col from Ricol has a fair bit of experience with this Haltech unit and Chris's MX5 and is pretty confident he has the tuning down pack. If you are asking me for specifics, sorry, I cant explain it any clearer but give Col a call he seemed liked a good guy and happy to help me with all my questions. He didn't say the Adaptronis wouldnt do the same only the Halteck was a better option in his opinion.
The guy in Miranda who recommends the Vipec says the Vipec is a much better option in the long run if I ever decide to race and want to be able to track data and road speed ect.
He also tunes Haltechs all though not an authorized dealer. He had a Silvia with a Haltech he was working on while I was there. His advise was stay away from the Adaptronic piggy back all together and the Haltech was limited in it's options and in a few years if I wanted to upgrade I would have to start all over where as with the Vipec it has it all.

I spoke to Steve and confirmed he's running the Haltech on his turbo car.
In support of what others are saying here he commented that back in the day Haltechs weren't too well regarded on MX5s, and suggested that CT had spent a lot of time and effort in working with the guys mentioned here to get it right.

He's pretty happy with the move he made to a Haltech.

It was on the back of a discussion with CT that I got a Haltech E8 for the GM, when it was a road/track car. Worked a treat :D , and I would happily buy another Haltech if the need arose.

It is still working a treat, now doing duty in the racecar (the GM now back to roadcar status).

I won't say you are making the right choice (only you can decide that), only that it is not a bad choice. My only advice would be to think ahead, and make sure you have enough inputs and outputs for what you are planning to do with the car - it is a lot cheaper to buy more capability than you need now, than to have to upgrade later.

I picked a tuner first, consulted him, sought corroborating advice, and went with his advice in the end. If you are using tuners, it makes sense (to me) to use a computer they are familiar with. I certainly don't want to pay for their time to learn the tricks of a new unit (or take the risks inherent in their learning the unit).

I never met a horsepower I didn't like (thanks bwob)

Great advice, it also saves you dyno time (and thus money) if the tuner has worked on many similar MX-5s so they can start with a map used on one with similar mods then work from there.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

The tuner just gets a map from haltech themselves.

I hate my haltech, but its a very old model, so thats like the tuners who diss all megasquirts cos they only ever used MS1.

Ok, Here is the end result for anyone that is interested.
This was using Deatchwerks 600cc injectors (Thanks Vic, Champion) and the target was 160rwkw.
Boost is 12psi and we couldn’t go anymore without upgrading to a larger fuel pump. Another $200.00 but I will stick with this for now. He did say though if I am going to track it, to upgrade the pump before I do.
Installed by Colin at Ricol after CT recommendations and I couldn’t be happier.
The car is transformed, perfectly smooth and scary fast. For me anyway. He did a great job.
Standard was 121rwkw as I had taken off the T-Piece mod about 6 months ago. I got him to do a before and after run for comparison.
Total was around $2400.00 for the ECU, loom, and fit and tune.

I couldn’t recommend him highly enough if anyone else is thinking about an ECU and is around St George area.
The shop was full of Silvias. I had to cringe.
