Re: Advice on extra quickness for BARMY the SE
If it's power you really want, talk to Tyrone. He can get you any power you like. I also have new pistons and rods I bought to build a turbo motor, never used them as I bought tyrones prebuilt bottom end.

Well right now its not really likely, but as soon as you swap turbos its quite likely. Even if you tune it to the same amount of power it will spool earlier and more efficiently. Therefore you will make more torque at lower rpm than you do now. Its the torque that kills the rods and you are at the dangerous edge right now.

Some of the best advice on an MX5 forum and often overlooked.
You'll rarely see yourself using all of your 174/200/whatever kW, but you'll often use a high % of your total torque figure, and like Dann says, it's torque that kills bits on a stock MX5 bottom end, particularly rods/rodbolts.
A T28 is pretty much what an SP runs, so it can be done safely, but if you want more power and torque, like Dann suggested, you're getting close to the point of risking breaking things.
When results speak for themselves - don't interrupt.

Re: Advice on extra quickness for BARMY the SE
I have just done the rods pistons on my nb8a. I did it for reliability. Yep it costs money, but you only live once. I guess I am addicted to power. I certainly didnt do it to improve track times or be a better driver. I gained 22 kw from a mild tune and couldn,t be happier.
couldn,t recommend the t28 turbo enough. No lag whatsoever.
Looking forward to your updates.

He really is an engine guru, at one stage he was making a motec loom for the SEs, not sure what happened to that project.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Someone should manufacture an SP airbox/intercooler, manifold and dump pipe for the Garret turbo.
I can see lots of people wanting to go down this path. SP owners would be pissed.

These great answers are why this forum is so good.
Loving the idea of a t28 making more torque lower down. That'd be awesome and exactly what I want. If it'll give more overall power through the rev range too that will be even betterer.
I've sent a couple of PM to people who have been dobbed in.
Special thanks to Dann by the way for making me realise I should perhaps let the motor spin a bit more to avoid having holes in the block before I get the bottom end done.

Ill have full kits for ANY 1.8L car available soon enough with this combo. And they will be better than SP gear.

Just sell the SE and get a SP ;)
All seriousness, you don't want the SP airbox....

You only want the turbo and downpipe, and even the downpipe can be massively improved upon.

Perhaps look at the FM turbo kit to replace all your turbo hardware and sell off your existing intercooler, pipes etc. or just buy their manifold and dump.

Can't imagine what SP bits I'd want apart from the scarcity value.

The real turbo perhaps, as previously advised.

Re: Advice on extra quickness for BARMY the SE
It's been almost a dozen years since the SP was released, i'm sure there's better turbos on the market now.
