Re: Si.G's NA6
The motor is pretty much sorted now, if only I could get my balancer off (not sure it is on all the way).
The shims are in, I just have to get a couple to get machined, and I have a nice Familia GTX cover so I don't have to mess around cutting an mx5 one.

Re: Si.G's NA6
Managed to find a few hours today for the car amongst the reno (knocking walls down) and my daughter.
The old engine is ready to come out now. Started seam welding also, I have to the parts in the wheel arches and took the seam sealer off the inner wings, just need the engine out to complete the front.

Re: Si.G's NA6
Having a bit of a push on the car this weekend. Had some packaging issues today try to get not standard injectors, fuel rail and manifold to all play nicely. Managed to get it sorted in the end, but I need to look an alternate way of holding the fuel rail on or gettin different injectors some time in the future. I have had to use the little donuts on the base of the injectors where they go into the manifold and the supra injectors I have don't reach as far as the stock ones, so could do with being further into the manifold.
The end result is ...
Tomorrow's job is to cut off the ATI damper. After much throught and reading, I have decide to use the alloy pulley that I have. I bought a set becaue I needed a ribbed water pump pulley.
Feel free to post up with all kinds of things like - it will just explode with out a damper. Basically this car does about 1000km a year if it is lucky, granted most of that is at 7000rpm, but I don't need it to do 50,000km. If I have to pull it apart every 2 years say, no big deal.

Awesome build mate!
I'll be going a similar route soon too, same ITBs as I'll be using.

BTW, are they the GaragStar velocity stacks too?

I couldn't really tell you if it is a good idea or not to run with or without a damper but if running without means a rebuild in 2000KM or running with means a rebuild in 5000KM and there is no discernible difference in what you achieve with the engine then to me it is a no brainer to stay with it.
Certainly I think it is something you should spend some time researching, it would be silly to compromise all this hard work for the sake of a small amount of work or cost.

Manifold and stacks are from techno toy tuning in the states, they specialise in AE86 stuff.

I have done a fair bit of reading. A lot of the honda boys who racing in the states use alloy pulleys, they have mod restrictions and the pulley releases 5hp - that is not really the point though, they pull there engines apart after a season and see no extra wear anywhere and they are revving the nuts of them.
It is a bit academic now, the ATI damper is no more, it had an argument with the grinder and lost. Looking at the balancer, I think it was on all the way, but it just did not line up, the extra bit that FM put on seems to be the issue. FM do offer 2 variations, so perhaps I got the wrong one (was 2nd hand). Though this exercise, I have found that I need a new boss for the pulley, the one on the engine i have is trashed.
New boss and gaskets are ordered and all being well will get to the machine shop week after next for a re-balance.

Re: Si.G's NA6
Hi everyone, the crank is back from the machine shop and my shims too, so my top end is now completely finished and the crank is back in. Just got to get a new oil pump o-ring and it can go back together.
Mean while rather than get the car closer to being ready, I have taken more parts off it
Done a bit of seam welding....
Looking a bit bare
Got some brace things too
Need to take more parts off to seam weld the other side

Looks great, going to be fun watching you and Waz battle it out once your cars back together.

Re: Si.G's NA6
As before, baby duties are keeping me busy, but I can report that the engine is now fully re-built, I just need to degree the cams and it is ready to go back in.
I had to do the loctite fix on my crank, the key way was slight enlarged at the end. I also had to get a new boss for the pulley, it looks like my base engine suffered the crank bolt coming loose at some point. The original boss was oval and did not locate correctly. For people who are concerned about doing the loctite fix, I would not be, it has worked perfectly and it is solid. I guess it is not that important for me if it is a like 0.5 degree out, because I don't have a TDC mark on my pulley yet and I am degreeing the cams anyway
I have also finished welding and painting the inner wings. Hopefully on tuesday I will be able to get the engine in.

Re: Si.G's NA6
Some pics of recent stuff.
I have degree'd the cams today, it is interesting that the exhaust cam was nearly spot on when zero'd on the vernier and only need the smallest adjustment, but the inlet cam was way out - I am speaking in terms of the lobe centres relative to the crank angle. I guess this could also be a symptom of my loctite fix, TDC might have moved slightly.
Degreeing the cams was a bit fiddly, luckily I have a spare balancer boss to bolt the degree wheel and them bolt that to the end of the crank. Getting it lined up to TDC was the hardest bit, because tighting the wheel to the crank could easily move the wheel. After about 3 hours of careful measurement, my cams are set at Inlet 106 deg ATDC and Ex 108 deg BTDC as a starting point with 60 deg overlap.
I guess for people that up grade cams and don't get adjustable verniers or degree your cams, you might not be getting the best out of them - I guess it is all a matter of tolerances and not everything is perfect unless you make it perfect.

Re: Si.G's NA6
Forgot to mention the motor is now ready to go back in, just need the mounts to arrive and to choose with gear box to use. I also picked up some Familar GTX injectors yesterday from 'and1'. They have a longer reach into the manifold, so will be swapping them in, once the motor is run in.
'and1' has a sweet SE, it is a really nice clean car with some nice bits on there. Hope to see you out and about.
