Cheers Dann. i was looking for some reassurance. I didn't expect to be changing the oil so soon LOL .. grr

What viscosity should I use? I was gonna just run 10W-30 as recommended by Mazda...?

So just plain old Castrol or Valvoline 10W-30 dino oil? Or a different viscosity?

Manga mentioned diesel oil as being a good "break in" oil earlier .. Castrol RX diesel oil in fact.. why would he be recommending that?

Actually I used it because the workshop that did all the block machining recommended it. Then fattima who used to be on this forum and had done a lot of race engine rebuild work gave me the same advice.

Tim, a quick drive to my place will help run the engine in. I can check the compression and help you drop the oil. If all looks good then flog it on the way home.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Just looking around the net and came upon this

These are Corky's recommendation for breaking in a newly built, or re-built motor.

Start the car. The car needs to idle well and be in decent tune. Verify there are no fluid leaks. Verify that there are no rattles, clanks, or otherwise abnormal sounds.
Let the car reach operating temperature. Drive about 5 miles or 10 minutes, during which you need to vary your speeds and rpms. Keep the rpms between 2000 and 5000. If there are still no rattles, clanks, or otherwise abnormal sounds, you may proceed.
In 3rd gear: You MUST use no boost, use partial throttle only, and keep the motor in the 7 to 15 inHg range. Accelerate the car to red line, staying within the guidelines just mentioned. Once the car reaches red line, lift your foot off the throttle. Let the car coast back down to idle.
Repeat three more times. Follow the guidelines mentioned above.
After 1000 miles have been run on the new motor, change the oil and filter. Use synthetic oil. Use any weigh of oil you prefer.
You may run the car in boost after step # 4 has been completed. Make sure the car is tuned well and has adequate fuel and good timing control.
