Oil Oil Oil everywhere...
I have a not so slight issue
Since the Turbo has gone on i have had after a long full boost run, on decel a Oil Smoke cloud appears.
Only seems to be in vacuum.
Thought it must be a PCV issue that i will sort out.
Went for the longest hardest boosted drive i have done so far and threw the car in the garage afterwards.
Next morning went down and noticed a couple of oil pools under the nose of the car.
Closer inspection showed these dripped from the lowest points of the charge pipes.
Pulled the pipes and found out my intercooler make a great CATCH CAN
BOV had oil dripping out of it.
Throttle body/intake manifold messy too.
Now i am thinking that my Oil Return could be the issue.
It is a Speedflow -8 size stainless line which was drilled just under the air con bracket.
It looks like it may just have a ever so slight uphill section
The wetness is a mixture of degreaser and oil.
Tried to clean the area a little first.
The issue with getting it completely downhill is the connection touches the air con bracket.
Maybe i can get a extension fitting to angle it uphill and further out?
I kind of wish i had of drilled like this guy
Hoping there is a way to make sure it is all downhill.
Would this be my issue do you think??
Is -8an large enough for a Greddy TD04?
Should i have gone with a -10an?
Could my issue be the Crank Pressurising and pushing oil back up the return line or is that crazy talk?
I also had oil on various hoses etc near the return which i assume could suggest the sump is pressurising and forcing oil past the threads on the return line.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Oil Oil Oil everywhere...
It is a brand new Turbo, but hey i would not rule anything out.
Is there a way to check for this?
Lets see if Google helps me out
I do not see any oil smoke when the car is running though.
Except after a boosted run through at least a whole gear then as i come up to a stop i get a oil smoke-a-thon for a few seconds.
Nothing i have noticed during boost though.

Incorrect size oil restrictor for the turbo?
Full catch can?

Incorrect size oil restrictor for the turbo?
Full catch can?
The TD04 is a journal bearing turbo as far as i know so requires no restrictor.
But i am only using a -3an size fitting.
Could this still be the issue?
It is definitely much worse with high RPM.
No catch can.
Stock PCV, blocked off hotside vent.
Not the greatest i know.
Thinking off running both VTA just for a test.
No blockage in or of the oil return line ?
Appears not. I took the line off and i can see light through it.
Will check the sump with a torch later on and the turbo exit fitting.
Thanks for the help so far!!!

Re: Oil Oil Oil everywhere...
I bet that its blowby caused by the rings, pressurising the sump, pushing oil up the return and out the turbo seals. Both through the compressor side and the turbine side.
Get a catch can with a slash cut.

What's that?
Also, slightly off topic:
How would run a catch can on an N/A mx5?
There's two valve cover breathers, would that mean 2 cans needed? (since one vents to pre-throttle, one post)

Re: Oil Oil Oil everywhere...
Just run both lines with no PCV to the can.
Slash cut is a small pipe, say 10mm diametre welded into the headers straight after the collector or in the turbo downpipe at such an angle to draw a strong vacuum. You then hook your catch can exit into the slash cut fitting and the exhaust pulls a strong vacuum under power on the crankcase, often able to produce an actual vacuum inside the crankcase as much as a few PSI negative.
If the catch can completely fills up the liquid is drawn into the exhaust burning it rather than spilling it onto the track.

Re: Oil Oil Oil everywhere...
This sounds like what I had although I have a rollerbearing
I fixed it with a 1.5 restricter in the oil supply line
You might want to check but I think journal bearings use a 2mm restrictor

Re: Oil Oil Oil everywhere...
Ok.. Here's a dumb thought
What if i used a medical grade one way check valve before the PCV, or even 2 Pcv's in line to make sure there is no boost leaking into the cam cover.
Then run a Catch Can from the hot side exit with another line to a port made on my intake to give constant vacuum into the cam cover.??
I guess if it Is my rings it won't do alot.
Would a compression check be of use too check ring condition?

Do the blowby check I told you how to do the other day then report back. Go do it now, it will only take ten minutes and report back

nah go load it all up when you can.
Worst case scenario Im sure we can do a quick hone and set of rings in a day

I've had a couple of WRXs and the TDO4 is the OE turbo for the MYOO Rex so I slapped a post on REXNET just to see what they came up with--
