Muffler Knocks Against Car

Postby zephyrus17 » Mon Mar 19, 2012 12:06 am

I just installed a new Cobalt Racing cat-back, and it sounds great! Only thing is, due to size of the muffler head, it knocks onto this brace thingy that's to it's left (when viewed from the rear of the car to the front).

The sound is pretty annoying, and I'm afraid it'll cause cuts/cracks in the muffler. Should I use heatwrap? or is that brace thingy just removeable?

Use big zipties around your rubber exhaust mounts and tighten them. I mean horizontally mount the zipties around the middle. It will stiffen the mounts a fair bit.

You mean to to ziptie them just around the rubber mount itself horizontally (like the equator of Earth)? Or to other hard points on the car?

Like the equator, use big zipties, and use a couple and do them hell tight with pliers.

Ok, thanks! I'll try that!

Any problem with leaving it like that until the weekend? Or should I get this done ASAP?

Worst case scenario the cable ties break and come off.
Then it will be exactly as it is now.

The other option may be that the exhaust hangers (the rubbers again) are old and stretched. (it's not likely) but it's possible.

Oh, I mean should I ziptie them asap or is this non-lethal other than the noise? I don't want a giant dent in the side of my muffler!

You'll probably have to get down and have a look. Odds are, if there's no dent or damage currently, you may not get any damage. Hard to say without seeing though.

There will probably be at least a few scratches though where it has been hitting the body.

That's what happened when I got my exhaust on my nb....got some new solid hangers and fixed the problem. The standard mx hangers are pretty flexible.

I got some hangers designed for a commodore exhaust

Hi.
Dans way is sound. I always use radiator clamps around the rubbers - have them on all my hangers ensures none will break and you can adjust out clearance issues.

Dann is the man! Cable tied the mofo mounts.. nice and tight. No more knocking sounds.

I also, uncertain if it was wise, ran a loop of cable tie from one of the muffler hooks to the corner of the swar bar. Would that negatively affect my sway performance?

It's on the main straight bit, but it's a bit near the 90deg curve, and right next to the sway bushings.
