Paint stripper or rub back help!

I recently had some idiot bump into my mx5, It didn't do any pannal damage just the nose of the car had been push in and bounced out to the point where the paint cracked like a spider web, what's the best way to fix this will paint stripper eat away the plastic bumper? How should I take it on?

best to take it to a panel beater if you want the best result. If you wanna diy it, better off sanding it then spray.

Been to a panel beater, they just told me to buy a new one but I'm not made of money and since the bumper is not dented I just need to find out the best way to fix it, I was told if I rub it back and get down to the plastic that I will end up with highs and lows since that plastic is softer then the paint

MX5 Plus have broken up a lot of cars/half cuts maybe they would have a nice second handy at not too much money.

Take it to another panel beater sounds like the one you took it to has too much work.

A mark in the paint and they suggested you replace the bumper!??!

A panel shop should be able to simply match up some paint, then rub back the damaged bit and blend it in.


You could have a go at home, but it might be hard to find a matching red.
And even harder to do a seamless job with a rattle can.

Red will be tricky but you can get the colour mixed into a spray can by your local automotive paint shop or even by Autobro. As long as you can paint and prep correctly, you should be able to cut&polish then wax it back to a decent finish.

Depends on the rest of the car and whether you really want it to look immaculate.

Suggest choose a proper auto paint shop supplier - one that has knowledge of product and items required - the generic accessory and supply places often lack specific knowledge.Your paint number is recorded on the vehicle. There are plenty of guides on how to paint and prepare eg your local library so take a little time to prepare what you plan to do including items required. I recently read a book ( out of interest) by a UK painter and he was using spray cans for many smaller jobs.

True, but also remember that paint (expecially red) fades and changes colour over time.
(and in the case of an NA mx5, has had near 20 years worth of UV)

DO NOT use paint stripper on a Urethane bumper. Sanding is the only way to go. Stripper even after rinsed will leave a residual impregnated into the pores of the Urethane and your paint will never stick properly.
