Battery for NA that fits!

Postby gslender » Fri Mar 02, 2012 10:16 pm

Hi,

My oem Panasonic battery failed and the local BatteryWorld sold me a SuperCharge MF43. They assured me it would fit.

Unfortunately it is slightly taller than the original making it not possible to be secured with the std brackets.

I can make some brackets to make it fit, but was wondering if anyone knows of a specific non-oem battery that is confirmed to fit a NA6. Most of the forum searches seem to talk about NA8 or later, so I'm unsure if NA6 is exactly the same or requires a slightly different battery than those that claim to have one that fitted.

Just letting you know Forum sponsor MX5 Mania have a replacement for your NA battery which has the correct venting and they are only $135 with a 24 month replacement warranty. I've got one in my NB and it's been great, plenty of cranking power, I couldn't be happier. The freight cost to Melb was about $18 I think so Brisbane would probably be about the same.

I had to have RACQ fit a battery back last October in my NA and same problem - no battery that matched what was in it so he got out the closest - the serviceman then left and went to a parts shop and bought a new bracket with taller rods, I think only needed one because of the strange way it attaches, fitted it and all was fixed!! Not a problem since

The car had been 'away' for a few months and whilst it showed full charge it didn't have the capacity to turn the motor over - I just happened to have filled the car only to find it wouldn't do a thing even after a 60km trip

Yep, I'm about to make a bracket to extend the bottom arm so that the oem threaded rod can reach. It'll be fine.

I've already bought the battery and waiting for a delivery would put the car out of action for a whole week... But thanks for the tips.

Does the supercharge battery allow you to vent the gasses via the vent hoses as per the original Mazda battery?

I looked at the supercharge website, however I can see no reference to this.

http://www.supercharge.com.au/product_detail.php?seq=25

You really do want to vent the battery.

Actually no you don't. Vented gasses are something that older lead acid batteries needed. This is not a lead acid battery.

there has been some very good threads on agm batteries. The real Mc coy lasts a very long time like 10 years. Your local Batteryworld obviously are not very competent and if it does not fit you could get a refund. Its not exactly a step forward.

Are you sure they make a battery that fits a NA6? Certainly nothing on their website is the right dimension.

What model do you think fits?

Yes it's a standard lead acid battery, They sold you the wrong one. You need an AGM battery as they vent very little, Supercharge GT12HR-35 I think. Anyway there's plenty of info on here about it do a search

Why is this an issue every time with part numbers?!?
I bought a SuperCharge Gold many years ago, before anyone knew about them, including myself, I had no idea what part number to look up.

All I did was measure the dimensions of the OEM Panasonic and went and bough a battery of a similar size.

Simple

no?

I wish you guys would cease crapping on about the supercharge gold MF43 as being unsuitable. You don't have a clue. Mine is going on for 6 years old and done over 100000km now - zero issues. No corrosion, no fumes, no nothing. Just a damn good product that works. I'm one of a large number of MX5 owners that are using them, and it was something that I bought to the forum's attention way back then when there were no alternatives under $300. If you're convinced they are wrong for you don't buy one, but there are plenty of users here who love them and have had no problems whatsoever with them, so you can't say they are unsuitable. I will repeat again for the hard of hearing that they are a low gas calcium on calcium battery, not a normal lead acid battery.

what bigdog said.

AGM is ideal, but a supercharge gold is perfectly suitable.
