If its hard to start first thing....I'd check the battery
My nb was hard to start in the morning....chucked the battery tester on it and it was on its way out....

I have already acquired a pump and am replacing this and the filter.
I think the logic behind it is sound (I am sure some may disagree).
If no go I'll look at the sensor.
As far as the battery, I don't think so but its good to consider all possibilities.
I'll install the pump tonight and see how that goes...

Thanks for your advice on this. Was definitely an issue with the pump. The hose from the pump to the metal line was split right up the seam.
I am surprised the car ran so well considering.
Car is great since change. It is idling a little more consistently and is able to handle much lower revs in gears without getting unhappy.

Someone who definitely knew more about cars than me told me the following a few years back:
Fuel pumps built into the bottom of the tank use the petrol in the tank as a heatsink to absorb the heat it generates.
So the pump will run hotter when the tank is almost empty and doing so frequently will lead to a shorter life for your pump.
So, avoid running the car to empty frequently.
Can any knowledgeable people confirm the the above advice I was given is correct/worthwhile following?

There's an MX5 fuel pump wiring issue called 'black wire' on Miata.net. Speculation has been that it's caused by running low fuel levels or not changing the fuel filter frequently enough, making the pump run hotter. I encountered it on an NA6 last year: viewtopic.php?f=55&t=46425

I think the filter will need to be replaced for sure.
