SSR wheel that broke, and there appears to be a response from an SSR rep which doesn't explain anything apart from provide PR spin. The thing is, under the wrong conditions, wheels will break.

At the same time, the likelihood is that if you've spend $8K on a set of wheels, you're likely to be a whole lot more careful with them than you would with a cheaper set of wheels.

I've dríven a set of cheapish wheels into a kerb. The result was a blown tyre and $5000+ worth of suspension and steering damage (back in 1994). The wheel just suffered some gutter rash. I would much rather have blown the tyre and destroyed the wheel, and suffered less damage to the suspension and steering.

I think a lot of people don't understand that it's the same group of factories that manufacture for a range of brands...including some of the big names. If you get into the factories, you will be surprised.

What you are paying for with the premium brands are forging (vs cold forging or casting), the really high quality finish, and of course the much lighter weight (as a result of the forging).

Yup, I've gone expensive wheels and I'm now that I'm in my 40s, I'm over the brand-name thing. OZ Racing make excellent wheels...but the number I've seen ovalised, dented, cracked due to poor road conditions.

I had another brand name wheel on my Golf years ago (OK...more than a decade) on a 45 profile tyre and thanks to council not patching a hole in the road...cracked the rim (funnily enough, almost exactly like the VOLK in one of those pics).

What people are getting at is that if money is taken from the equation, the Elise is the faster car.
(meaning comparing 2 cars from the factory, completely ignoring price)

Mazda MX5 = 1.49.88 (presumably an NB)

The MX5 is 6 seconds slower around Winton.

Looking at carsales, an 02 Elise is about $35,000
An NB is about $17,000


So, money ignored, the Elise is better.

Adding money though, you could easily get an MX5 to be the much faster car with the $18,000 you've saved.



The MX5 isn't the best car in the world, it is however one of the best VALUE cars in the world.
You get 95% of the Elise's speed, for 50% of the money.

Much less in modified ones, and every modified car is different.

Speed isnt an argument, dollar for dollar the mx5 wins.

Anyone who argues that the elise is better stock, who cares, 80 grand is better than 10 grand too. spend the other 70 on the car.

The questions is which is the better design. Its the single biggest selling sports car of all time, Im not the only one who thinks its the best car.

Peter, I think wheels are irrelevant now. This whole discussion is just about a certain member of this forum being upset because someone doesn't agree with him. I don't think this forum is big enough for that ego

But about Rota's, I agree with you. I have nothing against them and they serve a purpose. But I do find it funny that rota are essentially a knock off company and you'd think someone with the money to buy a decent company would also have the money to buy the real thing. that's not a fake vs real thing. Just amusing.
But OP has explained the reason, and ultimately does any of this matter?

Its funny how you say you cant believe that someone who can afford something should buy it.
Your belief is that the 'cool' stuff is the best, and should be bought by everyone who can afford it. Just like you believe that an elise is the best and should be bought over an MX5 by those who can. Some people believe that you should buy something that you want. And for some people the fact something is hipster as hell doesnt enter the equation, things like value, do.
Why buy one set of 'real' wheels, when you can buy an identical set of 'fake' wheels, along with a full turbo setup?
