NC power hardtop noise

Postby Noddycar » Fri Feb 10, 2012 9:47 pm

Hello. Having recently added the NC to the stable, I am noticing a "clunking" noises which I believe may be coming from the hardtop when I hit small bumps or drive onto my driveway etc. I am reasonably certain it is the hardtop, although finding the source is difficult (sometimes sounds as if it is coming from the door area). It does it more when it has been sitting in the heat and settles after a bit of driving, but never completely goes away. It is not a rattle, but a definite "thunk" .

Is this a fairly common occurrence with this model?

It's a common occurance but luckily an easy fix.

There are two rubber grooves that meet two rubber mounts on the top of your windscreen. Over time the rubber seems to wear away and the mounts get smaller than the holes. Put some grease into the holes and wrap a few layers of duck tape nearly over the mounts, that completely fixed my problem and my suspension is pretty stiff.

Cheers

Some of the Mazda Technical Service Bulletins from 1/26/06 onwards also provide info: http://www.miata.net/garage/tsb/

Thanks for the responses.... It is a minor annoyance, but it is still an annoyance regardless :D

It has only done 9500 km, so Mazda obviously have not engineered them terribly well. Having said that, it is a hell of a lot quieter than the soft top on my NA. The noise seems to get a bit worse after "spirited" driving or sitting in the sun. Will have a look at the mounts to see how much they have worn, but it would be a poor reflection on Mazda to see a lot of wear in a vehicle with such low km's on it.

BTW, this is a definite "thunk", not a rattle...... you could also call it a "thump" or a "bang", but I am sure you get the idea!

Hi
I believe Wheels magazine identified this, more so with the top down. They called it "scuttle shake" would that be it?

I have an NC2 that makes a noise too, but only now and then...it's got 14000km on it.

Happens when you go over things a certain way.

Yup - basically always does it when driving over bumps at an angle, it even happens when crawling over my kerb into my driveway. Not a big deal, just a minor niggle in an otherwise sensational car. It is just strange to hear thumping noises coming from a near new vehicle. They are near impossible to pin down, as mostly it sounds like the front of the hardtop, but sometimes also from the rear.

I recommend following the above members instructions. Worked wonders for my roof noise.

Hi. Haven't had an opportunity yet, as I had a quick stay in hospital. I am taking it easy for a few days yet, then will have a look at this. Thanks for the suggestions everyone - I will get around to fixing it soon!

Hope that you are well, I keep a Vaseline Lip Balm in my centre seat cuddy (it may melt in the console) and apply a little when I need it, clean the sockets before application to avoid a messy build up.
Greg.

Yep, all is well - just a little sore. Volunteered my nose for some surgery, as I could barely breathe through the damn thing. Getting my face re-arranged playing footy when younger finally caught up with me.

The lip balm would be really helpful now, as I can only breathe through my mouth! Good for the car as well.... Definitely will give these fixes a try, but every time I start moving I start bleeding, so might hold off for a week or so.
