How does a stock na6 ecu work??
Is it cell based?
Because i would assume the Ms2 is miles ahead in performance/Resolution but i am not in any way an expert so am curious if it works differently?

Dunno but the stock unit wasn't trying to handle boost ;-)

I would think a standard na engine would be much easier to tune for.

I'll try asking adaptronic why so many cells are required. Sure their answer might be "corporate" but it still might be an insight.

As someone that understands the code behind the ms2, I can vouch that it is at the very forefront on what is done in ecu systems. Take the number of cells argument, there just isn't any scenario that warrants more than 16x16 cells in a mx5.

I'd challenge anyone to outline a sensible argument for such a requirement beyond 16 cells.

The ms2 can be configured for more, but honestly it just wouldn't add any value and only be a waste of resources and effort.

I'd suggest most, if not all of the issue is ignorance - most of the tuners in Australia get trained by commercial ecu vendors whom actively promote how their mega expensive solution is better, yet frankly that's just not true nor proven.

He's played around with the NA8 ECU.
As for cell-count, I would have liked 22x22 or 24x24 at the most, to help fine tune the upper and lower ranges.

24 x 24 is 576 cells, 22x22 is 484. As you can see cell count jumps quickly when you start wanting more "points"

Why though.... Honestly how does having more cells help? The VE of an engine just doesn't change that much. My guess is that you are wasting cells in the belief that you're "tuning it in".

So no takers? Was hoping someone might be able explain why they think 16x16 would produce better results than 12x12 table.

Well I guess it is just that folks think that having 16x16 tables produce better results, and I can't see how that would be...

eg. at 40 map and 5000 rpm (VE 40), your next cell might be 40 map and 6000rpm (VE 50) - you've gone up by 1000 rpm, but the VE actually used is calculated by evenly dividing the minimal RPMs between 5000 and 6000... so the VE actually used can be anywhere from 40.00 through to 50.00. At RPM 5001, the VE is 40.01 and at RPM 5999, the VE is 49.99

Most people don't realise that MS2 does all of its calcs in 100th VE units... so the resolution and interpolation removes the need for more cells.

So how can having a another 4 cells across the entire RPM range help when realistically your engine just doesn't change from 4000 through to 5000 in terms of Volumetric Efficiency ??

Maybe other ECUs don't have or use interpolation - so maybe they need more cells, and is perhaps why they produce such rough and poor tunes?

Would really like someone who know's ECU/engines and believes more cells are needed to chime in...

I calculate that as 1,440,000 total interpolatable cells?

Hows that compare to your 500 odd?

So, i have been in contact with a few Big name Dyno Tuners in Sydney.

This is the email i have sent out.

Hi guys.

i have a 1991 Mazda MX5 1.6 that i have finished my turbo install and need the ecu tuned. I have a Megasquirt 2 with a microsquirt processor running a rough street tune .
I am after a safe, reliable, economical tune. Not really chasing numbers at this point.
I can provide a laptop with a registered version of TunerStudios installed to tune with as i assume you guys don't get many Megasquirts to work on.
Would you be happy to do this?
If so what are the rates and how long would you estimate it would take?

Surely tuning a car is not that different in regards to ECU?
Starting to really piss me off.
It is just a fuel and ignition map.

What am I missing here? Matt (Hitman) has said he can do it. I have used him, and found him to be a very knowledgeable and capable tuner.

Greenmachine, i know he said he can but i was hoping for a tune that is less than $1500 and that was at a minimum.
But yeah i get your point.
I was hoping to give passing emissions a few goes before forking that kind of cash over.
If this was last year when there was a stronger income coming in then i would have just locked Matt in. :lol:


Leading Edge Motorsport have got back to me with an estimate of Approx $600 for a tune.
They said it may be a bit more if they have difficulties with the software.
