Is it an aftermarket head unit? If so then a cage is pretty much the only option
Not only the cage but there should be a rubber knob that hangs out the back of the head unit which goes into a slot on the frame which is part of the car. This holds the back end of the head unit right.
If it's an Alpine head unit then that part is an optional extra which you need to buy separately or if you're lucky you might be able to grab it off the old head unit.

Yes its for an aftermarket kenwood double din, doesn't come with a cage at all so might need to get a universal one in that case

I picked up an original Mazda headunit 'cage' with a damaged dash that I bought from a fellow forum member. Try someone like MX5mania, MX5 Plus or a Mazda wrecker such as Allmaz in Melb.
Another possible option is a DDM Work surround as per this thread on the big forum. Don't know which tombstone this is designed to fit though.

I have the DDMWorks surround in my NA6. Its a little pricey for what it is but i would absolutley buy it again.
It fits the tombstone in my car perfectly and the finish of the black powdecoat is a damn good match for the tombstones plastic .

Is the OPs car an NB or NA?
Because looking at that DDMworks thing for the NA looks totally different to how the NB holds a head unit
