Mazda CD ?

Postby Basho » Sat Feb 04, 2012 3:39 pm

These are links to pics of the Mazda CD that was fitted in some NA models back when god was young , does anyone know what other Mazdas models these may have been fitted in ?

Or of any other cars running this type and size of CD player for that matter ?

This one was fitted to the 1996-1997 NA8 BRG LE:

Even looks like it might still be available.

Thanks for that, you can actualy still get the one in the link I posted new from Mazda with two provisos one is it's an 'order only' so there can be a bit of a wait , which is ok, --but --the cost is $1700.00 which, for me anyway, is , well , not ok.

I had that exact same setup in my first MX-5, which was a '92 NA6. The radio cassette is the standard unit for that time, with the optional CD player attached. This was a 1.5 DIN size to match the tombstone.

I gave the CD payer to my GF had the time who had a Red NA6. I may have the radio cassette unit lying around in my shed, I remember seeing it there a couple of years ago.

Yup , the radio cassette head units are relatively easy to find however the CD dosen't appear to have been fitted to many, (it may have been an optional extra ?) and as a consequence is not .

Cassettes were still in common usage back in the early 90's which would also possibly account for the low uptake of the CD player. -

-And/or a silly option cost if the current $1700.00 ask is anything to go by.

When I first got my NA, I naively bought myself a brand new genuine Mazda CD player (this model was fitted to the Mazda 929, 626 etc) of eBay from the US. The rear plug matched the CD plug-in of the NA radio, thus the radio controls worked the CD.

What I didn’t account for was the size. The CD was a single-DIN size thus was over-sized for the NA Radio and this CD combo for the tombstone. The CD player needed for the NA is ½ a DIN size.

This CD player is really ideal for the NB8A radio / CD combo.

So I’ve had this brand new unit sitting in my storage since. :(

Yup, bastard of a size and likewise current cost . :x

Do you know if this half din appeared in anything other than the NA by any chance ?

I actualy have a parts supplier looking for one in the US --niether of us are optimistic

I have been fighting the urge to install a modern single din unit and a couple of gauges ever since I happened on this

http://www.miataroadster.com/ddmworks/d ... 63010.aspx

especialy when I found out that it an be had with the single din on the top and only two gauges under (volts/oil temp I'm thinking)

I'm also fighting the coilover urge -----and the exhaust urge ----and so on

My NA6 is stock except for 15x7 6ULs .

I take it you are trying to keep your NA original? To be honest, my experience with the Mazda CD play was not great. It would skip if I changed lanes, and don't even think about trying to listen to a CD when going around a corner at a fast rate of knots.

If it was me I would get the 1 din tombstone from a '97 NA, get yourself a modern head unit...and enjoy. If you look around you should the able to find a headunit that has a similar appearance to the original.

Just my 2.2c worth (GST included).

Trying to stay stock but it's hard when inexpensuve good quality improvements abound.

Thanks for the hi tec info regarding the hi-po ( ) OE CD, I shall toil no more, hard to get is just a chase, hard to get, chased , got and inedible is stupid .

Please , no -one offer me one.

Bit of a silly question here , but how does the tombstone in the 97 differ from the 92 ?

Have Mazda ever done a 6 stack double din head unit like is found in some Subaru's and Toyotas ?

Thanks very much for that :D .

On the info regarding these old CD slave units it would seem that only the crash part of crash hot applies to them , I'm having a re-think , I wonder if there is a modern tech 1/3 din available annywhere ?

The '97 tombstone is a true 1 din size. This means a 1 din head unit will fit perfectly (subject to skills of fitter) and you have room for a 1 din cubby hole below it. The other option is to get a 1.5 din cubby hole, as per the photo below, from http://www.mx5parts.co.uk

With regards to a in dast CD stacker, I think the later model NBs had these. Someone else might be able to confirm?

I suspect you will be pushing it to something that thin. I think most the manufacturers cater for either a 1 din or 2 din headunits......but happy to be proven wrong.

Here is a couple of photos from my '91 with a '97 tombstone. Nice tidy fit, no gaps around the edges and a 1 din cubby box below. The headunit is a Alpine, with a in-dash 3 stack CD player. You load the CDs into a cartridgem which then gets loaded into the headunit.
