Heatwrapping Advantages of headers?

Postby AUZJDM » Sun Feb 05, 2012 3:16 pm

Hello all, I'am about too install a 2.25 inch exhaust sytem on my NA series 1 NB mx5, I've managed too get a set of Maxim Werks Headers and have been wondering if theres any advantages too heat wrapping them, I want under bonnet tempts too stay as low as possible as I'am later planning too super charge it on the coldside off the intake down the track. From what i understand heat wrapping the headers will decrease underbonnet temps, but people have said that it can cause stainless steel headers too crack. Any truthfull answers will be much appreciated, don't answer the post like the sun shines out off your ass... as what i had earlier, I'am being blunt but it irretates me when I'am on hear trying too learn about my mx5. thanks

The headers that came with my car were heat wrapped, they basically fell to pieces. I got a huge hole in them at the track and had to drive the 1.5hr home with the car sounding like a very loud tractor. I'm not sure how old they were or if they were stainless or not but I went with a heat shield on the new ones.

Ive just had a mate tell me somthing similar with heat shields but I'am not wanting too have a bolt on extra such as a heat shield to fix thi up, I'am considering looking at a protective coating for them,http://www.zircotec.com/page/home/1, this place would be ideal but there not in Australia :(

Still not sure wether to go stainless steel for the rest off the system or just keep it all mandrel bent either, I'am looking up a bit on the HPC coatings atm.

This stuff is the nuts http://www.aclperformance.com.au/prod_heatshield.htm

Available from supercheap...cheap cheap... http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online ... escription

Really easy to work with. Cuts with snips very easily and you dont need anything special to fold it, you can bend it by hand over the edge of a bench or with a bit of wood.

Just make up a template with card to figure out where to bend and by how much.

A mate owns a motorcycle exhaust company, he hates the wrapping, says it rots the pipes underneath. I've seen a few corroded examples. I think ceramic coating in and out is a good idea. I've used the wrap on racebikes but longevity was not the priority, insulating the exhaust heat from the rear shock was, and it did a great job.

Heatwrap just falls to bits after a while and leaves a mess. If you heatwrap over ceramic coating then you destroy the (rather good but expensive) coating.

The ACL heatshield is very good stuff. If you still have coolant hoses too close to the headers you can wrap the hoses in adhesive heat reflective tape as well.

Ok, just take them down to get them HPC at Brendale, but be warned it ain't cheap, $200 for new extractors.

If your going to run a cold side blower then it won't matter if your headers are cooler or not.

Me, I spent my money doing more interesting things with my money!!!

Don't know if you can get used headers coated????

Thats what I used, my new extractors had a heat coating on them but decided to go with a shield as well.

a quick google and i found these guys, http://www.performancecoating.com.au/ and http://www.thermaledgecoating.com.au/ no idea what they are like to deal with etc.

i will be interested to see which way you go with this, as its something i have thought about for a while now. my whole exhaust on my nb8a is stainless and mandrel bent. Xforce headers and muffler custom mid section with declogged cat plus lots of other engine mods

not sure if this will help, but i have made some temp measurements (using an indoor/outdoor thermometer from jaycar) between the throttle body and my mania intake, and found a difference of about 15deg c between the two when the car is moving at reasonable speed (60km/h ish) and in normal conditions (25deg outside or less). temps at my mania intake were around 20-30deg. i did see tepms as low as 4deg but that was at night in september i think.

hope ive made sense :-)

thermal edge coating are pretty good. I think it was $220 for ceramic coating and they dip the headers in acid before coating them. So they can do old headers/extractors.
Cheers,
