If not a troll. Search.

Questions like that prove how far away from being able to successfully turbo your car.

Best bet would be to post it on miata turbo. They are most helpful, with questions of this type.

You're making this place about as welcoming as miata.net...

IMHO - That turbo is probably going to prove less than ideal for an MX5 at 8psi...

Mmm a Td05-20g, is this for a 1.6 or 1.8? At 8psi you'd be better off with a smaller turbo, if you're thinking of higher boost it may be an option depending on your end goal. I'm currently running quite a low compression on a 1.6 with a Td05-16g. Once it's re-tuned that turbo will be at it's optimum which will be around 23psi, which should see around 200rwkw. With my low compression and the 16g it can be a bit laggy until you get to around 3200-3500rpm and then it'll begin to wind up. But for me this suits as I putter around a bit as it's my daily and it generally doesn't rev much more than say 3,500rpm. My father-in-law had a Td04-16b on his 1.6 and he had boost down lower and thus the power came on earlier and finished earlier. Just depends what you want in the end.

You're right Sean, but so are the others. This is an alarming question coming from someone who is considering adding a snail to their mx5.

It reminds me of that red NA6 on eBay recently. Someone had bought a stainless eBay top mount manifold and DP, a 3071 Chinacharger, a massive FMIC and a bunch of universal intercooler piping and bolted it all on to their 250,000km clapped out NA6 with absolutely no engine management or fuel/timing mods. They then ended up selling it for $3K, kindly noting to potential buyers that it "goes like hell" but "sometimes runs lean" and "will need new injectors".

o.O

I get that, but why be tools about it? Bark has given a great informative response without the crap, and I'm pretty sure he's done some real world research to back his claims.

It's easy to rubbish an idea, particularly when you've never had hands on experience.

You NEVER build a turbo system around a turbo. NEVER. Maybe around a manifold/dump.

Some people feel that its far better to trash an idea bad quickly because subtle hints that it may be a bad idea, still often leads to stupid decisions.

Its clear based on the first post that OP isnt ready to build a turbo car, And trying to do so is probably going to end up like said ebay na6. So why would we encourage him?

I agree he's not ready, but there was a time when I wasn't ready too, and thankfully I asked around (not just on here though) and was fortunate to get lots of constructive advice on mx5s and turbo charging in general.

Then when I was ready I made some better decisions that were well informed. I'm always open to offering advice on stuff I've done, and have had a hand in a bunch of reliable turbo 5s and even a few NA ones. My wide band has also been hanging from a few e85 EVOs lately, so while I don't profess to be an expert, Im far from inexperienced.

I'd rather encourage someone to seek more info in the hope they can achieve something, it's a better option (for my mind at least) than just shooting then down.

Thankfully there are lots of easy turbo options these days in bolt on kits any monkey could fit. I started with a basic AVO setup and went though a couple of different engine set ups and countless turbos to get to where I wanted. The benefit to me now is if I build another one I can use that experience to do it easier and cheaper in one go this time.

I've also established a good network of people with far more experience than me who are always helpful too... I'd just prefer to help him get to the point where he is ready and does it right.

Good feedback Sean, we all started from nowhere once and this forum was (and still is) great for advice/bouncing ideas around. I don't profess to know anymore than anyone else, all I have to give advice on is my experience. If that can help someone else then good!
