Windscreen Scratch Repair Kit Works Well

My NA had an annoying wiper blade scratch that ran the height of the windscreen on the driver's side, that was about 4mm wide. I bought a Windscreen Repair Kit off Ebay in the U.K. and about 5 hours of reasonably hard work later, I'm very happy with the results. There's a few tricks, including not having the slurry too wet, or it doesn't work as quick, and DEFINITELY keep the slurry away from your rubber parts!!, because it will stain some of them permanently(oops)... But for about $50, I have a good screen again(although the kit only just had enough materials in it for my huge scratch), and when I don't need the car for commuting in 3 years, I will restore it, and give it a new screen then. You can use these kits for headlight glass too, and also get kits designed for headlight and blinker plastic lenses. Sorry if this is rehashing an old thread, but my server is too slow to search. Curious what's in it, it would need to be fairly hard stuff to polish glass!

Hi - the kit has 3 ascending grades of 3" sticky backed glass polishing discs (my scratch was classed as heavy, so I had to use 3 grades before getting to the final polishing stage), and a small bottle of cerium oxide paste for the final polishing. The first grade used is to feather the scratch right out, and it makes the glass satin, and then as you ascend the grades, the glass gets less and less opaque,until you polish the life out of it with the paste and the drill mounted felt pads supplied. You use a spray bottle of water to work up a lubricating slurry with the discs and also the finishing paste. The kit includes mandrels to fit into a electric drill, running at 1500 to 2000 revs. I occasionally had a little trouble controlling the 3" discs in the drill, but the 2'' discs that were for the last buff before the paste final polish were easier to control. They are listed on Ebay under "Windscreen Scratch Repair Kit" if you want to see the kit (everything needed is supplied in the kit), and some of the websites have video of how to use them, and also show the plastic polishing process.. Hi TieNN89 - that one is a bit light duty for long wiper scratches - I bought this one - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Windscreen-D ... 20ba143a1b .. and when I told the seller what I was trying to do, they generously included some extra discs. It did take a lot of effort on such a big scratch, but the screen is now super clear, and there was only just enough discs in the kit- as the disc edges wore down first, I was cutting the worn edge off and then using the smaller mandrel to use the disc centres. I haven't tried the chip repair kit, but it sure looks interesting, and the feedback seems good on it. Cheers derek

Might even grab the leather kit as well but I'm not sure if it would work though cause I have a few cracks in the leather

Years ago when I had my Starion, the leather upholsterer I used recommended Mr Sheen (non-scented) as one of the best leather treatments around and that's what I use today. Give that a shot before you fork out for an expensive leather treatment kit that may not perform any better anyway.

It's not a treatment its a repair kit for repairing cracks and tears... but mines more of a wear and tear with no care crack

Okay just bought the windscreen chip and crack repair kit from the same guy

Sent a message to them asking a few questions last night and got a reply this morning so pretty good communication there

Now to play the waiting game

Hey Drek.

Didn't know this stuff existed till I read your post.

I bought the stuff TieNN89 found, because the wiper abrasion on my family car caused by the outboard end of the wiper, although quite long, was not very severe and, at around $25, was cheaper. When applying the polish I found it hard to see where I should be polishing because the polish hides the scratch, so I stuck pieces of masking tape on the inside of the widscreen along the path of the scratch. The pieces of tape, visible through the polish, allowed me to see where I should be going, and they alowed me to see exactly where the scratch had been when I was finished. It took less than an hour to remove.

Good stuff. Can recommended it.
