Why do Australian mx5 roll over bars mount on the rear parcel shelf? After seeing many international half cages, 90% of have the diagonal bars passing through the parcel shelf and onto more structural parts of the car. Seems like that would make more sense too as the parcel shelf is very thin and can be quite easily cut through.
I would surmise in a roll over event, the parcel shelf wouldn't be able to handle the load and would crumple. Especially if the car is put into the air and dropped upside down. Now keep in mind I have no engineering background so I have no idea if the parcel shelf would indeed be strong enough. But based on the thickness and so on, I don't why this is the chosen mounting point for us in Aus.
Factor in that most international cages and half cages for Miata's require modification to the parcel shelf so the diagonals can pass through, why is Australia different?

To me, it looks like the Hard dog bars and so forth would be a safer alternative to a BD or Plus bar. I'm not trying to undercut forum sponsors here and I have the utmost respect for our domestic market and our economy; but after some shipping ressearch, the Hard dog hardcore bars seem to be only $800-900 shipped to your door internationally. There are countless photo's of mx5's destroyed with this half cage in place, which would show that they do indeed work... quite well!!!
Which makes me wonder why our domestic manufacturers haven't copied this design. Could it be that CAMS have restrictions on the possible mounting places for our roll bars? I've read into the CAMS specs for half cages a while back but it's been forever since I've glimpsed so I don't recall specifics other than mounting at the seatbelt bolts, having at least one cross bar and two diagonals and that it must be constructed from steel.

And another question. *flame suit on* I know that this has been covered countless times but I'm still yet to see someone with a logical answer. Why are alloy bars considered unsafe? As I understand, the wall thickness of the alloy bars are greatly thickened so it will theoretically be as strong as a steel bar anyway.
As far as I recall, alloy bars have been used in racing for decades anyway.

Would anyone be able to shed some light on this?


Just been doing some more "research" but I understand that the torque bar is suppose to compensate for the fact that the bar bolts on to the rear parcel shelf. MX5+ reopen next week. I will contact them and ask them this question and post their reply. So far, the MX5 + twin hoop I think is the go, especially given the later post regarding the attraction that a single loop attracts (not that this is the prime issue).

When I looked at the two bars, the + bar attaches to the extremities of the parcel shelf where there is more support from the wheel arches etc, so this is a stronger mounting point. You also don't have to cut up the parcel shelf and the bar also does not run directly on top of the fuel tank. I spoke to both suppliers about what forces the bars would cope with, and chose the Mx 5 plus bar.

I am looking at all this stuff again for my NB as I will be hitting the track in it and I am also thinking of getting a log book on it so need roll over protection that is CAMS compliant.

Looking at the guidance given in the CAMS manual, Schedule J, Page 10, Section 13 for open sports cars: http://www.camsmanual.com.au/pdf/10_gen ... 2012-1.pdf

And then looking at a pic of a BD bar and a + bar I think the BD is 'more compliant' with the rules regarding the distances at which the rear stay and cross bar must meet each other and also how far out towards the side of the car the vertical legs of the main hoop are (the drivers shoulder is not supposed to stick out of the main hoop)...the BD bar seems to sit out to the side of the car further?

Been asking about roll bars on other forums and people overseas seem to say that our BD bar is just a glorified style bar and will do nothing in the event of an accident due to the parcel shelf mounting position.
Is there any truth to this? Why DO we use the parcel shelf instead of cutting through it and mounting lower in the boot on something more 'structural'?

If the BD bar rear struts were attached to the parcel shelf at a single point on either side, they'd have a point. However it's not. It uses a wide plate across the width of the parcel shelf, which spreads the load and according to Brown Davis it does the job fine.

Sounds like a typical ill informed opinions you would expect on the internet....

I have a BD in mine and have no intention on flipping my car on its lid to test the roll bar integrity. CAMS approval is peace of mind enough for me.

The only downside to the BD bar is that the cross brace impedes rear vision in mirror and when looking over my left shoulder.

if one is really concerned about driver safety on the roads then buy the later model cars with either all the ANCAP stars or ones at least with air bags. Knock it if you like but an airbag is a darned good investment. As an aside I recall a colleague QA manager who was provided with a co car but who opted for extra safety features for his family out of his own pocket. At the time I thought this was odd but now the Stars are virtually a given with new and quality cars. If I was going racing I would probably fit a roll bar and have little doubt that the BD unit is as well engineered as the others.

I have no question in my mind that the brown davis is strong. My only query is the parcel shelf. I've seen all the tests and so on performed on the bar itself but I just don't see how the parcel shelf can take the force of impact. Even it the force is distributed more evenly, it's still across such a thin surface.
