Speedo needle pulsing .
My speedo is pulsing I've checked the gearbox drive and it's fine no sticking rotates freely , the cable seems fine as well with no sticking pont when it's rotated and the speedo responds OK when the cable is rotated by hand.
I've packed the cable linkage at the gearbox with high temp grease and this seems to have calmed it down, however decelerating 40kph and going down it shows up again.
Does this mean that the frakin speedo head is going ker-ching $ gimmee ?

Thanks,
Where would I look for that ?
It's an NA6 so cable drive not speed sensor and wire,

Was going to say the 1989 NA6 was mechanical all the way.
Basho, have you unscrewed & checked the speedo/ odo end in the dash?

No , it's a pita to unclip the thing , I've done everything at the gearbox end including getting oil on my head and I figure that if the cables the culprit I'll have to put a new one in regardless so I'll give myself the agro of R&R-ing the fraker just once.
Incidentaly Mazda want $180.00 for this little item, Ebays in the US for US$95 but the damn cable is for a LHD so I'm guessing it will be as much use as tits on a bull for a RHD.
How can these damn parts cost half the price when they're shipped half way around the world ? rheotorical , no need to answer.

20 years since I had to disconnect it at the dash end on the NA6 - wasn't too bad, but I removed the drivers seat so I could lay on my back with my head under the dash & feet on the parcel shelf.
LHD could fit, but without knowing for sure it's not worth ordering it. Maybe check MX5 Parts (UK) price if you haven't already.

Theres a method to this one , check this out, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toaLegEPbiI -it's a hoot and usefull.
The LHD US one will work but I'm not sure how the extra cable could be run and as I can't work out how much longer it is I'm hesitant to go there unless I someone else has done it and I can looksee first.
I've got one in my shopping basket already at MX5 UK just waiting for them to confirm a delivery time , I'll probably just check out tomorrow when they're back (Monday UK time) anyhoo.
You wouldn't know how long they usualy take offhand would you ?
necessary.

If its possible pull the inner cable out, wipe clean and lube with a light grease. Make sure you refit the rubber washer at the gearbox end of the cable or oil from the box can work its way to the speedo head, with dire consequences to the speedo head.

Thanks mate , nope , it's locked in both ends why would mazda use some common sense and make it so you can just refit an inner cable ? that'd be to easy, practical and economical, it's also isolated from the gearbox oil by the drive I'd be suprised if oil climb is possible with this set up.
I'm convinced that every car manufacturer has a special division dedicated to working out the worst possible design for purpose , they also sideline in bits that designed to fail the first time a spanne goes near them. these divisions are so good they even frack up thier own production lines--eg --3 bolts on the baby teeth , should be 4 but obviously the last captive nut couldn't be set in production so no 4th bolt ha-frakin genius at work .
Another point in case is the what appears to be a half guard around the speedo cable connection on the back of the speedo it's carefully placed so that reaching the clip to detach the cable is beyond awkward and as far as I can ascertain--totaly unnecessary.

Which Mazda dealership quoted you $180? I just ordered one on Monday arvo at Penrith for $154 and picked it up this morning.
My speedo cable wasn't causing the needle to flicker....was just noisy intermittently and driving me insane.
I was going to go down the Ebay road from US but decided against it when I found I could have part in 2 days locally and realistically cost around the same after shipping was taken into consideration.

The $180 quote was Gold Coast Mazda , Gold Cost businesses seem to come under the special fedreral R&T (rip nand tear) tax your ass policy.
The US cables are for LHD and are longer than RHD ones I've been assured that they work but I personaly wonder how much extra cable there is to accomodate theres not much space in there for slack.
I ordered one last night from the MX5 parts UK people the cable cost $54.00 , I had it shipped with 7 silicone coolant hoses and the frieght cost was $24 for the lot, the entire shippment cost $205 to my door.
I payed paypal, it's already shipped Royal Mail recorded delivery and I expect it within the week--we'll see
