Quickest way to kill jintai bai ?
[code][/code]Just drove a 2001 nb with avo turbo installed. Now it has dawn on me what turbo lag is. I don't think turbo is for me. It felt like a rocket was strapped to the car as the power was not very linear. Personally, I think it's the quickest way to kill horse and rider.
I always thought of people who recommended against a turbo for the miata as being too conservative. Now I understand. Once the synergy between throttle response, break, weight distribution and suspension is off balanced, the miata just losses it's magic.
The new golfs have integrated turbos very well to beef up mid range but I reckon even that in a miata may blunt it's sensitive throttle feel. Maybe supercharger or a very very small turbo is the only way to go??

My NA8 with an AVO kit that made 212RWHP did not have any noticeable lag.
My NA8 race car with AVO kit that made 250RWHP did not have any noticeable lag.
Try and get a drive in a couple of examples. The size of the turbo, exhaust design, boost levels, intercooler design, other engine mods and even driving style all make a difference.

Fair enough...maybe it was a bad example with too much boost. It was a avo 2003 install. It was like the surge felt very unnatural and non linear. The very aggressive turbo valve relase was also not to my taste...very loud. I like engine sounds but not that sort of sound. I can certainly understand the appeal to some people though. When boost was on, I don't think too many cars could drag race the mx5 I drove this evening. As it shoved right back to the seat.

Was it running an open pod filter? You get a lot of Darth Vader coming through a pod filter. The blow off valve (the pewchewwww noises) might be a style that vents to air to.

'Too much boost' has NOTHING to do with it. If the turbo is of poor design (like an SE) it may lag, if the downpipe or exhaust is too small it may, tune etc etc.
Was it lag, or dont you like the car becoming more powerful at 2500rpm?

Depends what you are used to driving to. If you have never dríven a light turbo car it could feel like everything is a bit mental and happening to quickly for you.
How much of a drive did you get? A squirt through the first 3 gears withouth keeping it in the sweet spot might have made things feel wrong, like if you snap the throttle shut and let the revs fall to far before picking up the throttle in the next gear and you have to wait for it to pick up boost again...Flowing along with it the revs in the right spot and it feels really awesome, like you just have a really big engine
Just a big surge of useable torque.

@miatalim - What sort of rev range were you using during your test drive? You mention the VW TFSI engines as delivering the sort of experience you prefer. They are tuned to deliver a flat torque curve which peaks at low revs but runs out of puff at around 4500-5000rpm. They suit economical driving at low to medium revs. Very common tuning setup for modern turbo cars. Is that what you're after?

when I installed my turbo it felt very aggressive but within a week it began to feel normal.
I understand how you could think it could make the car worse for handling (transition into boost)
you learn quickly not to hit boost mid corner instead as you come towards the corner you go
to a gear that puts you well into boost from the start of the corner. this ensures no transition into
boost and gives you great throttle response. the best part about it is with lsd you can exit corners
amazingly fast which is by far my favourite part of driving it adds a new and exciting element to
cornering.
luckily the only type of corner where you would transition into boost mid corner is turning at traffic
lights. after no time youll know when your car is about to hit boost so you can adjust your throttle
accordingly.
anyways if you dont like turbo's thats ok but dont expect to have off idle boost with a supercharger
as they linearly deliver boost so you have full boost at redline (which sucks cause you never really
get much time at full boost). but they do feel extremely smooth compared to a turbo and they
are far more fun than a stock engine mx5.

My SP put out 181RWkW at a club dyno day, and it doesn't have any lag to speak of.
The power builds very smoothly from idle to redline.

I've had a few people drive the car, and they are amazed that it feels like a big V8 under the bonnet with a very linear power curve, so the car you drove obviously wasn't set up correctly.
I have to admit that the car has more power than it has traction and can feel like a wild animal, but that's the way I like it!

My BOV vents into the intake and I am running a boxed pod filter, but you can still hear that spool and "woosh" clearly inside the cabin under WOT acceleration and slotting through the gears. My car has basically no sound deadening though. Personally, I love the sound - the spool makes me feel like I'm in a jet at takeoff ;) I would not drive it hard anywhere near a Mr Plod though - certainly not until it has been engineered (which it will be soon).

IMO a turbo mx5 is about as close as you can get to a perfect drivers car dollar for dollar.
Sure, most people will never be able to drive a stock mx5 at its limit, but for more experienced riders, a more powerful horse is a must have

I agree the turbo is just like driving a normal mx5 but as it comes on boost the acceleration is fun, instead of acceptable. If you put a turbo on a non turbo mx5, you have lost no power, just gained more. So there is no lag, because it is making the same hp as it did with no turbo at low rpm. If i had my way i wouldn't drive one without a turbo. I don't like being beaten in a straight line, or around corners. And you can't go past the $ per hp of forced induction.

Ive had Patricks 'Casper' at my place for the past few days doing some work to it, apparently someone broke his outright mx5 record recently. Ive just got it fairly sweetly tuned on the new ECU and having (well over) 200rwhp is so fantastic.
Its really nice to be able to give it a squirt and overtake so quickly and safely etc.
