Re: AVO Melbourne can do full turbo install for NB
Someone please enlighten me. If most turbos and sc in aust are not ADR compliant then why does this section dedicated to force induction when everything outside of an sp and se is illegal?
Which turbo kits are ADR compliant and legal in Australia?

Pretty sure the vast majority of modified cars across the country are illegal in some way.
Also the regulations differ from state to state, and from engineer to engineer.

Because most people are going to do whatever they want with their car anyway and because the MX5 really becomes a sportscar with 200BHP+ at the treads.

It is possible to legally fit a V8, supercharger or turbo to a late model MX5.
Problem is that it neither easy or cheap

You could consider buying either a SE or SP where the engineering work is already done.

Re: AVO Melbourne can do full turbo install for NB
Going back to the AVO turbo kit and the tuning side of things. This would be fitted: http://www.avoturbo.com/avoshop/product ... cts_id=981
My first NA turbo had an AVO kit on it which had been fitted a couple of owners before me. When the chap prior to me got it the car made 180RWHP but also used fuel at a shocking rate and would stumble going on and off boost and would struggle with AC and power steering loads. It still had the AVO supplied 5th injector fitted in the inlet (supposed to help meet the fuel demands of a turbo engine) and the AVO piggy back computer, he was told that this was causing all sorts of issues....the computer was basically a poor solution to tuning and the 5th injecter caused cylinder 1 to run rich while cylinder 4 was running lean etc etc. It was retuned and things improved and it gained 10RWHP but it was still not a nice car to drive.
A Haltech ECU was fitted with a fuel pump and bigger injectors and the 5th injector was dumped. It was turned on a hub dyno and made 212RWHP at the first cut and north of 300NM torque.
Maybe things have improved since then (the original install would have been 5 years or so back).
Would I fit an AVO turbo kit? They are okay value I reckon but I would not consider them to be a complete kit and I would spend more money on a proper ECU and fuelling, exhaust system, clutch and oil cooler.

A fifth injector and a poor piggyback ECU? Sounds familiar...
NB brakes are bigger than your NA6 ones. They're a popular upgrade for NA6 owners.Basho wrote:And at least another $1k for brakes-- if they're anythink like my non ABS OE NA6 ones

Mazda complied with ADR for the SP not to mention SE, so why should an NB with a turbo be such a big deal.
We are just copying OEM.

Ah, but we aren't.
Different manifold, different turbo, etc.
The main thing that stops the kits from being legal is the Emissions requirements, and the EPA law about not being allowed to have a programmable ECU.

OP's problem is he located in Vic & if he wants a legal vehicle registered in Vic that's also guaranteed to be fully covered by comprehensive insurance, then as Blue94t, D-mag & others have found out you can't get an aftermarket ECU legally engineered in an MX5 in Vic due to the EPA, unless you go the ICV or Hot Rod route like the V8 MX5 curently on Carsales.

Yup and a set of calipers and 250/255mm rotors can be had for $440 + pads + shim/anti rattle kits + caliper rebuild kits + new lines ( optional) + fitting (if not DIY) the 275/270mm rotors and calipers are useualy a fair bit more--$750 and up--
This is an observation not a yelp.
Shoving a huffer on any car always costs between 50 and 500% + more than the cost of the kit even if that cost includes installation.
IMO the first warnings with AVO should be piggyback and 'extra injector'.

True but only if we are talking about emissions. Legality is much much more and it should not be.
