I think he is saying that his guage sender is on the cold side of the thermistat, then it seems that it stays cold for a few minutes and then when the thermostat opens it jumps up.

Id check the thermostat.

^^ exactly right. I will be checking thermostat. I am 90% sure that the gauge is fine, as I got it brand new, and it is a VDO gauge. Plus there isn't much to go wrong in a mechanical gauge. Also, sorry for the hijack

Makes sense. Thermostat must be openning early them. Should be 82C for NA6 and 88C for all others. My old man memory isn't good though.

Had similar issues, just crappy Tridon thermostat. Never seem to have much luck with them.

Years ago I bought a Tridon one for my Daihatsu Feroza and that was stuck closed, then bought one for my Nissan S15 and that wasn't opening fully.

Staying with genuine from now one :P

Took out the genuine mazda thermostat today and boiled it up to see when it was opening, and it is fuly open by about 84*C, which does not explain why my around town temperature is about 60-70*C. Suggestions?

what temp did it start opening is the real question, doesn't matter where it fully opens.

I am now pretty sure that it is the gauge, as after an easy drive it showed a reading on 120*C. The cluster gauge read just below middle and the fan was not on. Over the space of about 5mins it went from 120*C to 80*C to 100*C. Gonna call up rare spares (where I got it from) tomorrow
