Antenna problem

Hi, and thanks in advance for any assistance. I have a mk2, and whenever I turn off the radio or ignition, the antenna retracts as it should, but the problem is that the antenna motor still churns for about 20 seconds afterwards, and advice on how I can fix this noisy issue?. Cheers.

The plastic retracting cord is either on its way out (breaking or teeth worn), or it has jumped the corresponding teeth on the retracting wheel so the motor will continue to turn for a bit as it doesn't sense the resistance when then mast is fully retracted.

Does that make sense :roll:

You can open the casing, but it's a bit tricky to line up the teeth and reassemble.

How long should the motor continue to run for after reaching max low/high on a 'normal' antenna? I ask because I just installed a new mast and the motor continues to run for 2 or 3 seconds. I figured that was normal.

It must be the saeson for these damn things , I"ve just done the same thing with exactly the same result (NA6) , new mast and it runs on for 2 to 3 seconds when the aerial goes fully down --or fully up for that matter.

I've measured the tail on the aerial and it's 38cm with the aerial fully extended and it's 19cm to the pick up point in the drive unit , leaving 19cm to wind on/of before anything happens .

The actual spool itself is quite small and my main concern is that to much excess rope being wound in will damage the spool teeth or spool drum itself.

So I've loped of just over 9cm to see if it makes any appreciable difference, winding up is slightly improved, winding down bupkis , still trhe same.

With masts at $75 + P&P a throw I'm not game to go the extra 6cm it probably should have knocked off it to work properly just in case I root it.

Being very mindfull of the old adage--"If it aint broke mod it till it is" :lol:

Any answer anyone ???

My auto-antennae rarely runs more than a second after the metal has either extended or retracted.

I'm only concerned as it sounds as though it's jumping teeth in the final second of the up cycle and after 2 fruitless hours trolling the net I finaly found one post from a person with a volvo or ford or jeep something who had similar symptoms and kept going through masts, he gave the whole thing away and installed a whip aerial .

At $75 + p&p a pop for masts I don't want to be going there.

By the bye if you've got this scenario going with your aerial cleaning out all the crap grease from from the drum and drives till they're spotless won't fix it--won't do any harm I guess --but it wont fix the over runing. I know :evil:
