Miata roadster short shift....

From looking around it seems Miata Roadster's short shift kit is the go.

$U.S. 250 inc.boots etc. I'm thinking about ordering one for my 2002 NB 6sp.and would be interested in any local reports on it or others that might compare favourably

Borrow a Voodoo shift knob from someone before you go down the short shift trail, they are not for everyone.

However, I think you should try a short shift on another car first. I had a voodoo first and then got a short shift on top of that. Was not a good option. Every gear went in with a notchy clunk feeling and there was noticeably more force needed between each shift.

I think if I were to have a short shifter again, I'd buy one in tandem with a stick extension and heavy knob such as a joyfast or something. That way you have the stick closer to the wheel and a short throw to compensate for the otherwise longer throw between shifts you would gain from an extended lever.

This one has a length extension available optionally so you can have the best of both worlds!
Take a look at the testimonials under the Miata Roadster ad.
I know, you can't always go by these, but they are pretty damn impressive!

Most of the 'testiemonials' were by people who had thought the engineering was great, or had only fitted it and dríven around the block once.
A few sneaky admissions about notchiness, and physical effort to shift snuck in as people started clocking up some miles.

This SSK is not for everyone, and as per most modds, another compromise.
The shifting IS more precise and mechanical, but it IS also noisier (one piece solid shifter,losing the insulated oem stalk), and it IS stiffer to get into each gear ie takes more muscle effort. Lisa couldnt physically get the car into reverse without using two hands.

After a while i found it tiring in a DD, so i used a 4" ext, and put a 4" delrin gear knob on that to lengthen the stick, to reduce the effort.
It is now finger light, but looks tall, and not the appearance i like.
IMO, save your money.

I installed my kit yesterday, took approx 20mins plus going out to get some white grease.

The throw is shorter, but absolutely not needed. I know you just got your car and are in the spending stage but honestly...you don't need it.

I still have a tendency to overthrow the length I require.
