EGR real world benefits?

Postby timk » Tue Dec 13, 2011 7:57 pm

From what I have read on the US forum, EGR looks to be a good thing as far as keeping the combustion temps down at cruise and also a small fuel economy benefit.

Does anyone have any real world results? Perhaps from someone who has blanked off the EGR system?

My JDM NB engine doesn't have the EGR solenoid at all, but the Aussie NBs do. I guess the Japanese don't think it is worth it?

For a street car I would be inclined to keep it, but most coolant reroutes prevent use of the EGR tube. It would be good to know if it is worth making up an aftermarket tube that allows use of the coolant reroute spacer, or if it just a waste of time.

Any thoughts?

The main benefit would be to emissions. Very few people have the facility to measure that correctly or accurately on a 5-gas analyser.

Presumably Japan runs to different emissions standards.

There would be few benefits apart from cleanup/simplifying. The valve gets closed under power so it won't net you a power benefit.
