Battery question

Postby Silvia » Sat Dec 10, 2011 12:54 pm

My handbook (2002 NB) seems to indicate that the Australian model's battery is not a maintenance free one .The battery in mine looks like it could be though...2 oblong caps on top with a vent hose connecting them and going outside. The caps do not seem to want to come off easily so I'm wondering if they are not meant to?
It looks like the original battery, but being nearly 10 years old could this be possible?
It has a yellow sticker on top with Japanese writing.

What is the name on the Battery, the fact that it has the two vent pipes indicates it is at least the same style as the original which in my books is a big plus :)

It's written on the side against the guard and I'm a bit reluctant to disconnect it to haul it out (effect on radio etc.?) . I can feel it though - braille any good?

Would indicate you should not take them off.

Yes, MX5 batteries commonly last beyond 10 years.

More proof that it is probably the OEM battery.

Doing a search on batteries on here and the big forum might give you more info.
The OEM Battery in MX5's was an Absorbed Glass Matt battery which are maintenance free.
The only maintenance required is to ensure the battery is securely clamped, connections are tight and clean and not damaged.

If it works, leave it alone.

OK thanks, if it ain't broke....and all that. It is an impressive run for a modern battery.

Once you get a quote from Mazda for a OEM replacement you will understand why they should last over 10 years

Thanks. We have a local MX5 shop that sells one for $135 with 2 yr. replacement waranty. I could check that out if needed...
