195 or 205 on 7" rims on an NA6 1.6

195X50X15 are near perfect sizewise for an NA6 until you apply them to to a 15x7 rim then I'm not so sure, I've always run 205 's on a 7" and I'm concerned that the 195 may be to narrow for a low (29psi) application on the 7" rim.

I don't realy want to run 205x50x15 they're outsize for the car and I think could take some of the edge of it.

I'd realy appreciate some advice from anyone who has been there , done that , also a pic or link to a 195x50 set up on a 7" rim would be fantastic if anyone could post it.

As an asside, I loathe 'stretched' tyres.

I ran 195/50/15 on my 15x7 rims for a while.

It's not stretched by any means, it's about square.
ie: the sidewall does not stretch in, and does not baloon out.
That was with Federal 535 tyres.

I now have 205/50/15 on the same rims and the sidewall sits proud of the wheel lip. (Personally, I think the slight baloon effect looks great with the wheels)
These ones are Toyo Proxes4, which from what I hear, Toyo tend to make their tyres a little fatter than advertised.

Thanks for that, by loosing a bit of edge I meant performance wise , I only have the 1.6 motor , which goes well but I'm guessing that it wouldn't be hard to slow it down by applying the best of intentions :D

I understood what you meant.

To be honest, I felt no real difference in performance from the 205s.

The main difference was changing from the shithouse bald Federals to the much better Toyos.


To be honest, 195 is the easier option.
Much cheaper and easier to get as well.

I only chose 205 because I wanted the fat tyre look, some extra grip, and the higher sidewall meant that my speedo was corrected, and that I'm now just above the 100mm minimum height.

Until recently, I ran 195s on my 15x8 inch rims. Even that was not what I would call a huge stretch. A little stretch, sure, but personally I think it looked classy rather than ricer.

Unless you plan on tracking your car on a regular basis, and/or you have some serious power and/or suspension mods, you won't notice any real difference.

I am now running 205s on my 8 inch rims and I wouldn't like them to be any more balloon-like in the sidewall. Personally, I would stick with 195s in a 7 inch rim for that reason but each to their own.

Basho, was going to suggest this when you posted your wheel thread question earlier in the week, but you seemed committed to aftermarket 15"x7".

FWIW, Norm Garrett reckons 195 on a standard NA6. As you know NA6 has 14"x5.5" rims & NB8A has 15"x6.0" rims - common mod used to be to 'plus 1', i.e. 185/60x14 to 195/50x15. NB8A rims are plentiful & cheap as long as you are happy with the look on an NA.

Thanks mate, I'm committed to a set of 6UL 15 x7's I pick them up Sunday , I thought about NB rims but reasoned that I would definately need to keep the weight as close to the 13 all up kilo OE that the 14's have and I didn't think that I'd be quite as on the money with the NB 15 's as with the 6UL or the Enkei RPF1 ,( the 6UL 's came up at the right cost first).

I'm across just how much difference 2 or 3 kgs can make on a wheel especialy with a small powerplant or even a beefy one for that matter my last S13 was running 235x45x17 rears on 17x8 rims and I choped them to 224x45 and the difference was amazing , I was suprised just how much.
