i had this issue in my honda integra.
New thermostat fixed it.

I also had the issue lets say on a cold day..
if i drove at like 150k's lets say on the.. M4 or any high way non stop .. my engine would get colder and colder..

This is an interesting thread, as it describes some of my issues. However I think the thermostat may not necessarily be the problem because when I start it the coolant temp on the dash will go to the middle, and then my coolant temp gauge will suddenly rise to 60 or so. I always assumed that this was because the stock temp sensor is at the back of the head, and mine is in the top hose and as a result it would not read until the thermostat opened to allow water through the radiator. Is this a reasonable assumption. However, when driving the coolant temperature is always sitting around the 60*C mark?? I assumed that if it was getting stuck open then it would read a temperature from the moment the coolant started to warm up rather than just jumping to 60*C. Thoughts?

Just like what I should have done is what you should do. Stop being lazy and grab a 12mm and check the thermostat :)

But is what I am saying making any sense, cause like it has done this from the moment I put a new thermostat in, so I always thought it was normal?

Yeah i would expect the temp guage to stay still, then move fairly fast if the sender is on the wrong side of the thermostat.

However 60c is FAAAAAAR too low a temp. So you need to fix it. Will it go higher if you just sit and idle it?

Yeh it does. It also sits at about 80*C on track. Could it also be that maybe the thermostat is closing, and that the temperature reading is actually from the stagnant coolant in the top hose, and that it is not actually flowing.

I didn't mention that it is a mechanical gauge, with uses an ether filled tube. Would this have any bearing?

Well, that's the thing. With the mechanical gauges the sender and the gauge are all one sealed unit. If you remove the sender the ether comes out, and no more gauge.

if the guage goes up to 60 straight away, then that is kinda a dead givaway. do you think that your coolent can go from cold (15-25C) to 60C in a second? at least that is the way i see it.
