as Apu said, you can reach them from the "mouth"
it's tight, but you can get in there and unscrew the horn from the bracket, then take the bracket out through the top.

it was normal practise for OEM horns to be a low note and high note ie the horns were different part numbers. I am not sure if the MX5 employed this approach. A $12 horn is not likely to have been made with quality materials or had any quality control and they are subjected to a hostile environment. Air horns are certainly in my opinion a worthwhile investment in being heard in a small car. A quality air horn can be shifted from car to car. The compact air horn may be the easy way to do it though twin trumpets do fit.

Both horns in the NB are high tone.
I checked with mine before I put the new one in.
As for the quality of the $12 horn, it's a Narva product, so one would expect a level of quality.
It's only a standard disc horn, even the best ones would be extremely cheap to manufacture.

Looking in the engine bay it appears ,in mine, that one could undo the top bolts of the alloy cover and bend the cover up enough to get out the horns. They are suspended down in the "mouth" by a bracket fixed at the top by another bolt. It would require the replacement horn/s to be no thicker than the existing ones so they can slip back into the gap . The Wolo horns (Google 'em) seem really loud little fellas but not available here it seems

So I had a look at a Narva 112db horn at Autobarn @ $30 and that might be able to squeeze in. It has 2 prongs +and - so I guess i'd have to make a lead from - to a bolt somewhere and get the positive to go in where the brown wire is now, in one of the existing horns I remove.
Only had a high tone so have to look for a low tone somewhere....

It is not a Narva product. All they do is get items made by a sub contractor possibly Chinese or other low cost country and branded- this is very common practise. The guy in the street often does not really know which company makes the product they buy.

Could you please explain how this is relevant?
The topic is asking about horns available that are louder etc.
I saw no questions being asked about the country they are manufactured in.
You have also pointed out and raised points that are irrelevant, and you have no experience in.

How was this helping to answer the question? You have said in that sentence yourself that you aren't sure what the MX5 employed, so you provide a guess.
The original poster has asked for answers, not estimates or guesses.
Please, if you have no experience or expertise in an area/topic, why do you feel a need to comment?
I personally have never had experience in changing a clutch, so you will not find me making a post about how to do it.
I will gladly offer my experiences with the finished product, but I won't comment unless I have personally done/experienced something.
Everybody else on the forum manages to look at a thread and realise "I have no knowledge of this topic, I shall not post, anything I post is at best, a guess"

the subject was woossy horns and various points were raised including air horns . Since it is a car forum it is quite probable that some people are interested in matter related to the subject ie horns. It was not me that raised the point about Narva- I was responding and I felt it was relevant to mention that this co are not a manufacturer. Insofar as the MX5 is concerned I did not offer a definitive comment on low and hi as I was not sure. There is no rule that folks cannot add information on any subject.
My experience with horns does include buying OEM horns low note and high note which were fitted to the Magna. I also was involved in a quality issue with horns that did not have a good outcome for my employer. I bought aftermarket horns including air horns twin and triple trumpet from a Italian co though that was quite some time back- aftermarket is much less demanding than OE . I chose on my own car to fit air horns - twin trumpet.

Right! Back to business. Went to our local Car Bitz and bought a Nava 112db low tone ($20).
I saw it has two connections and the nice guy there made up a short earth lead and slipped it on for free
At home I undid the bolts and prised up the alloy tray over the radiator and pulled out the stock horn, screwed the new horn onto the same bracket,did up the connectors , dropped it back into position and did up the fixing bolt for the bracket ( after bending it back a bit to aim better out the "mouth")
Job done . Won't blow your socks off, but much louder!
I can in the future do the same to the second horn if desired....

I contract a lot of my work out and if it is not to scratch the the suppliers/ providers can ƒü¢k off!, because I could not afford to retain them and expect more work. Do you really think that a company such as Narva could afford to flood the market with sh*t products and hope to retain their name and position in the marketplace?
