Overcooling

Hey guys,

Somebody slap me,
I bought an ASI 52mm.... Yep, its HUGE.

Now if I dont ler it idle for 15 minutes it doesnt warm up, and today I let it warm up to 80c, drover 6km to pick up the gf from work, and when I arrived it was 66c.

I dont want to block the radiator, And really, the thermostat should allow the engine to warm up independant of the radiators size.... Anyone got any ideas?

And no the thermostat isnt stuck open... Well it wasnt last I checked.. Maybe a ill pull it out and quadruple check operation.

Interesting problem. What happens if you drive a decent distance or go for a thrash?

At the point where the radiator is affecting the engine, doesn't the thermostat have to be open?

Thermostat should stay closed to allow the engine to heat up then open only enough to maintain that heat in the block.
Either the gauge or sender are inaccurate, the thermostat is opening too early or you've modified the system and are bypassing the thermostat.
Assume you'll know how to check all of the above.

Yeah... Silly thread sorry guys. Ill pull the thermostat out and look at it. It was dodgy-ish. I bet its stuck a few MM open.
My thoughts align with sailors... Stop kidding myself and pull the thermostat.

Yeah if I go for a hard thrash it hangs around 85-90c.

Just let it get to 75. 3km later im at 58.

Thermostat MUST be stuck open.

Is your cooling system rerouted? If you are running a racer reroute like the BEGi system then there is always SOME coolant circulating through the system independent of the thermostat.

The thermostat may also have been drilled to allow easier bleeding of the system (did you install the thermo or was that a last owner item?). With a big rad, it takes very little circulation to keep the temps down. Driving my car at temps any lower than 7-10 degrees ambient is a real pain.

Ive had everything except the sump of this engine since Ive owned it.

It hasnt been drilled, but it has be in and out a dozen times the laat 2 months. Probably rusted open, its a bit dodgy.

Minw did the ame thing a few months ago. Since the thermostat was only 7 months old. I excluded it from my search. In the end, it turned out to be the thermostat.

Thermostat went on mine too (was only 20000km old too)

Symptoms very similar, driving along (especially on a trailing throttle on a big downhill) the temp gauge wound all the way back to the cool mark!
