anyone using project mu brake pads?

hello

Im in the market to buy new pads for my turbo NA.
I want to keep the 14in wheels so bigger disks are out.

does anyone have any experience with Project Mu pads.

they look the goods and specs seem to be good.

I have red stuff on the car at the moment but after 2 hard laps there gone!

so im thinking these:

My car has MU pads, I am unaware of the specs or actual part numbers... but what I am currently using i'm happy with.

Brake dust is my biggest concern, although I do wash the car regularly . The pads have been on the car for my knowledge of atleast 10,000 km and they have dropped 2mm of pad depth. I drive heavy, so more pad wear is expected than the average driver.

Tbh I checked my pads the other day, as part of the track day preparation and was actually surprised with the amount of meat left.

Alternatively I would recommend purchasing Hawk HP+ pads thru Bryan at Good-win Racing. Great person to deal with and good pads at a decent price.

Agreed!!

I'm currently running yellow stuff front and rear. Good for my nc. Brake dust is crazy but they are all similar in my opinion.

I used those on my old turbo race car.

I guess my advice is not entirely useful though as that car had Skyline GTR discs and Impreza STI Brembo calipers (which fit under 15in rims by the way) however they worked extremely well for lap after lap bringing the car down from some serious speeds. They would probably take a decent shove of the brake pedal on the road when they are stone cold.

What discs and fluid do you use?

If you have serious issues you might need to look at ducting some air through the centre of the discs and maybe putting a blob of the colour changing paint on the outer edge of the disc to see what sort of temperatures you are hitting.

RedStuff pads aren't recommended by EBC for track work; they're great street pads and produce little brake dust.
YellowStuff pads ARE recommended bt EBC for trackwork; they're NOT good street pads and produce shedloads of brake dust.

At the end of the day, there is no great single street+track pad combination.

Dedicated track pads will wear your rotors faster than street pads so you really don't want track pads for DD'ing.

I never swap pads anymore and I've used a few sets of XP10 and XP12's now. They're pretty noisy when cold but my rotors are holding up much better than they did with the Ferodo's and Hawks. I found the hawks had the best initial bite but dark heavy dust, Ferodo's were less dusty, quieter and significantly more expensive. They were the worst on rotor wear for me as well. Carb's have been my favourite, good bite when hot, lots of dust to clean but it's lighter coloured and they last the longest and my rotors are lasting well. That's with a LOT of trackwork though, I very rarely taxi the car around these days.

dont know what fluid is in it.

I had a look tonight and the pads have heaps of life left in them aswell the dba slotted rotors.

so i will be changing the fluid first and then go from there.

Dont really want to spend to much money if i dont have to!

Glen,

I was seriously considering the Project Mu rotors and pads when I did a brake change recently. I couldn't find much feedback where they've been used on MX5s, but they seem well regarded in most motorsport circles. Price was fairly expensive though, especially the rotors.

I eventually went with Series 4000 rotors and Pagid RS29 pads; but have still not ruled out trying Project Mu next time!

The Pagid pads I'm using are ceramic and are the same compound as fitted to Porsche GT2 and GT3 from the factory; so they work extremely well on the track and are also vey usable on the street (my only street use however, is driving to and from the track). Extremely easy on rotors, so much so, that after nearly six months motorsport there is almost no noticable rotor wear. There's still plenty of material left on the pads too. Dust is also a non-issue; there's hardly any and it's a light colour so you can't see it.

I'm extremely happy with their performance. They work well cold and work very well when hot, with no fade and very little noise. Apart from the price I couldn't be happier. I bought them from V-Sport in Sydney, however Pagid don't make a pad specifically for the MX5, so V-Sport organised for a set of pads to be cut down to the MX5 shape. Apparently it's a fairly standard procedure but does add somewhat to the cost.

Discussing brake pads is much like talking about tyres and engine oil; it will always solicit a range of experiences and reviews that will not necessarily reflect your particular needs, driving style and/or car set-up etc. Best of luck in your search.

I used PMu HC+ in my old 200sx. It was doing 1:06 at wakefield and 1:46 at EC and they were very good. Never had fade or any problems, but i was running proper ducting to the centre of the rotors.

They also worked well on the street and seemed to be fairly kind on rotors.

I'm going to get a set of B specs for the mx5 to try them out as i dont think my car warrants HC+ at the moment.

Yep that is correct.

When you go through pads fairly regularly you can save a bit of money by always keeping your old pads. You can then send them off to have the old material machined off and new material bonded on.

If you dont have any old pads you can always ask on the forum to grab someones old ones for a token fee or buy some compressed mud $30 crap pads off ebay and use those for it.

I always used to order a set of pads and as soon as I fitted them send the old ones off for remanufacture as it can sometimes take a while to be done.

the project mu are still on the top of the list!
