Clutch Line mod ?
I'm suffering a notchy gearbox syndrome so I've changed the oil and put in 75/85 VMX M slight improvement , not realy though, so next I've bled the clutch as nothing seems to be leaking no improvement there either though, got me stuffed I've read posts on here and can reach no deffinative conclusion as to what to do next from that exercise , the car is into Maxda on Tues for the timing belt /water pump/ pulleys etc etc etc-rip so I figure I'll ask them to have a look ,it'll be more efficient and cost effective that playing hide the sausage in 24 gazillion different costly unsolutions.
Anyhoo to the point , when I was bleeding the clutch I noticed that the clutch line takes a bizare route across the bulkhead and then back to near the staring point, I presume our American/European LHD wallys figure in this nonsense somehow, it could go a way to explain thier fiscal frak ups.
Is there a braided line or hard line and braided combination kit that I can get from anywhere to eliminate the wanderering line ?
Or does 2 metres of line when 20cm and a bit of braided would do actualy have a purpose ?
And yes I've searched, I'm 62 yo and would like to find an answer before I die.

Lol, said it before ill say it again, theres no definate solution mate.
When the brake lines total 15 odd metres, if 3 feet of clutch line was an issue, we would all be dead at the first bend.
Cheers,
Dann

Re: Clutch Line mod ?
The clutch line answer is very close to you!
MX5 Plus Hydraulic Clutch Hose
I doubt the shorter line will fix the notchyness!
You could compare to another NA6 to see if yours is actually a problem or just different to what you are use to.
There is a fair bit of reading on gearbox oils however you won't find a definitive answer.
There are a few recommended oils you could try.

True on the brakes but it's more like 7 foot on the clutch and thats 7 foot that could be 1.5 which is 5.5 foot less air bubbles, dirt and uphill bleeding , unless there is some reason for it being the way it is.
I wonder if the bloke that cocked this up got fired ?

Excellent , thank you for that , I don't expect it to fix the gear issue however it will make life easier if I have to bleed the damn thing again - and you know that's going to happen.

Re: Clutch Line mod ?
I recently broke my oem clutch hose and removed the whole lot and replaced it with a direct braided line, a lot more tidy, and cleaner

Its got me, I'll be ordering one on Mon.
I just adjusted the freeplay and the hight in the clutch pedal, someone had been there before me, not nicely, slight improvement, I'm leaning towards a new clutch dammit , I've done everything now that can be done mechanicaly and even though it's better overall it needs to be better.
Is the clutch on the MX5 NA6 normaly fairly heavy ?
If this was in any of the performance cars I've owned previously (WRX is R34GT-T, RX7, 180SX-X) it would be a heavy duty aftermatket jobby not the OE.
Also I'm wondering what the symptoms of just plain old age are on a clutch ,- if -this is the origional clutch it's 20 years old and has 80000 on it .

Nope. Clutch on stock NA6 is fairly light actually.

Probably the same drongo that specified a pissy fake oil pressure guage.

I dont get the oil pressure and non linear water temp complaints. It tells you what you need to know when you need to know it right?

Re: Clutch Line mod ?
Yeah, but it's more a thing about why even bother.
The NB gauge is non linear, it has a sender with two steps
<7psi and >7psi
at >7psi the needle sits centre
at <7psi it sits on the bottom stop.
The same task coulc have EASILY been accomplished with a low oil pressure light.

So they left the design of the guage face nice like it was, its not a loss really.

Thanks for that, this clutch aint light so it may be faulty, according to one manual they can get rust and bind on, don't know how the dam thing would work atall then though -ah hell Mazda Tues they can diagnose and I'll take it from there.

Re: Clutch Line mod ?
Wow an Na6 with only 80,000km?
I'm betting the clutch is binding on rust
The NA6 clutch is light in original state, even heavy duty diaphragms are light by WRX standard.
Replacing the clutch is a home job if you have the tools and time, but the gearbox on an mx5 is pretty heavy, probably best to let the mechanics do it if its not your thing.
I had an occasional notchy engagement, replaced the slave cylinder and it came good.

Re: Clutch Line mod ?
Well it went away yesterday to do the timing belt/water pump tango to the music of Mazzy Mazda and the Getchacash Band , should be back this afternoon, but my bet will be tomorrow.
I asked them to please check out the clutch/gearchange action as well . I'll post when I know, it may be of assistance to someone else with similar symptoms.
I've got the gear but I work alone so it'll go visit Mr Transmissions and the 5 parts trio to do the "Don't forget the gearbox input shaft oilseal" tango.
There are lots of jobs I can do. and do -and there are others I can, but shouldn't--timing belt replacement for example and there are jobs I can, but physically can't , like humpin a gearbox out on my own on the deck.
Car has had two owners 1 for 18 years who serviced it according to time and one who didn't . it did 58000ks in 18 years and 20000klms in 2 with the last vacuous vandalous vrukhead , I think bought it just in time to bring it back to near minty. so far it's set me back about $1800 (in a week) with just a clutch, maybe. to go.
