NA8 top tank cracked at 152k 4 years ago . Wishart Radiators (yes, THAT Wishart) in Nth Melbourne charged $80 to replace top tank and pressure clean and test. It's done 45k and 43 track days since then. No worries. :P

there's a built-in indicator - the colour of the top tank. :P

it goes from black to brown as it ages and develops tiny cracks.

Yeah watch out when they go brown... Mine went brown - when I took it out it the water was also brown and full of rusted crap. Moral of the story: If your radiator has turned brown get a new one

150,000km here, top tank was brown. Radiator was full of gunk so got whole new rad.

Roughly 260,000kms when i purchased the car ('92 na)

Still on its original rad.

I have since replaced it with a 42mm asi unit because i didnt want to risk it breaking on me during a drive somewhere.

And what do ya know?

When i was trying to remove the upper rad hose from the rad.

If its gone brown and your planning a trip, i wouldn't take any chances.
