Supertech Pistons - thoughs/opinions

Hi All,

Newby to the forum.

I am after some opinions on the supertech pistons for the 1.8 BP engine. I have an N/A BP DOHC in a race car and was curious, I have been looking at the 85.5mm bore items. At the moment the engine is at 1885cc, and these would take it to 1952cc, which is suited to my needs.

I assume you are aware that at 1950cc with those big supertechs you wont get much engine life boosted.

Buy aspirated yep sure.

As said, plenty making over 350 on them. Here in oz we are all brand wankers and dont seem to trust well priced parts like these. But in the states its different.

The engine is N/A, so that side of it is not an issue. Thought a custom head gasket would be in order, what is available off the shelf?

Does anyone have the specs of the valve relief depths/diameters? And how much material is under them if machining is required?

Just use the Maruha gasket. Other specs I cannot help with sorry.

Thanks Dann,

I have 3 blocks getting sonic tested at the moment to pick the best one out. That was the restriction on the current engine, the block was pretty thin and it was the only one I had at the time, plus pistons in that size were impossible to get back then (without having customs made, or modifying others). Now I have a surplus of blocks, and bits are easier to get and I like the look of the supertech items for what I use it for.

The Maruha gasket is readily available, any suggestions where to get one at the right price?

Im sorry I couldnt suggest a place to get one cheap. The supertech high compression, big bore pistons, with E85, and M Tuned rods is an extremely capable and well priced combo.

What are the build plans out of interest?

Ok, as you can probably see by my signature the engine is in a Mk1 Ford Escort race car. It has had 3 different BP's in it so far with various states of tune. The one that is fitted at the moment is one I have been developing over the last 2 years.

The specs are:
Bore: 84.00mm (nissan CA18 N/A pistons modified to fit)
Stroke: 85.00mm
Spool Rods, fully balanced internals, lightweight crank
Capacity result: 1884cc
Twin 45mm Webers, flowed with CNC 38mm venturis.
Ferrea 35.7mm inlet, 30.5mm exhaust valves, fully ported and prepped Head
Cams, 264@50 inlet, .430" lift (10.922mm)
264@50 exhaust, .430" (10.922mm)
Advertised duration 312 deg (on both inlet and exhaust)
Inlet cam is dialled (starting point only) @ .168" TDC
Exhaust " @ .154" TDC
10.9-1 comp ratio, PULP 98 fuel, 4-2-1 custom extractors

Straight up this package made 140kw @ the wheels. There are a number of areas for improvement (eg: the extractors were designed for the previous engine and are far too small and completely wrong in length, I'm yet to play with the cam timing, and the carbs are probably be going to be too small when done).

Plans are to run this engine for 2012 and make the improvements to the exhaust/intake etc. during the year, then build up a larger capacity block with lighter rods and pistons, and higher comp and switch to E85 and put it on throttle bodies.

I buy all my Maruha stuff from Maruha themselves. Just email them the parts numbers you want, and they send you a paypal request. Pay it, and it'll be turning up on your doorstep 5 days later.

I didn't know you could run different manufacturer's engine in IP. I would have expected it to run Sport Sedan where there is greater freedom ...

You forget, this engine is also fitted to Ford TX3 Laser

So it is pefectly legal for I/P regulation.

Of course! Similar Ford-Mazda situation as GM above.
