NA6 Viscous diff

Hi All,
Out at QLD race way yesterday. Rolled back into the pits and noticed diff oil under the car. Had a quick look at the diff and noted that the shaft axle on the drives side had pulled out of the diff housing and sitting loose.
After pulling the diff out today to inspect it, the diff looked in good condition like new.
I plan to make one diff out of two. To get me through to Xmas when my new diff should be here from Japan.
Question is what would cause this to happen. I did run off the track and my line of thinking that may have loaded up that side of the diff and popped the axle out then. Could/Or is there another mech failing in my car that may have caused the issue.
I'm running coil overs with semi slicks. So it does grip pretty good.
Any one done this before?

The circlip at the end of the shaft has come off?
Look at the rest of the shaft all the way to the hub, something is probably bent or broken, thus shortening the length of the shaft.

Nope still on the axle
I did hear a pretty big bang when I went off the track
I'm guessing that might of been when it happen
I don't know how common this is though?
Hopping there is no other issue

Uncommon. Although, as you know, it's easy to remove the half-shaft from the diff itself, something else along the axle would have failed in order for it to pop out by itself. Also check struts.

Did you drive the car home? If so, how did it feel?

I was going to tow it, but been a tight a$$ I drove it home slowly. Around 60kms. It felt fine. I've got the car in the air at the moment all looks good. 1/2 shafts seem o.k. as do the struts. All the bolts where tight.

well you did say you heard a big bang, so that indicates something has broken.
Have you check EVERYWHERE? ie. top of the struts inside the boot, PPF etc.

I could maybe put the bang down to a bump stop, or my pride as I was getting passed.

The diff and the shafts look as good as new. No loose bolts every thing looks fine. I might just replace the clips on the shaft. Then throw her back in and drop the clutch.

I've been in maintenance for quite some time, the problem that I have, is things happen for a reason. RCA.

The diff is back in,
Took it for a quick run, all seems good. Hopefully just a one off. Torsen 4.3 on the cards. Just trying to get my hands on one is the problem at the moment.
No more old diff oil smell in the work shop.
