stealth turbo/SC kit? p plater wanting boost on the sly

Postby sanchodotdj » Wed Oct 26, 2011 5:58 pm

hey guys im a p plater and am in the process of buying an mx5 (na8/nb)
wanting to know if there are any stealth thurbo or sc kits available
i have seen some pics of an AVO turbo kit and it looks like the turbo is mounted quite low and i could get away with some extra heat sheilding to hide it
The jackson racing SC kit is a little big and mounted high so cant really hide it
(any low mounted sc kits?)

basically im a p plater (have had a few rotors and turbo cars before though so i can drive and am not an idiot) and need something that wont get picked up by the average police officer, thats why i opted for an mx5 in the first place

any help would be greatly appreciated

'flamesuit on'

but on topic, look into remote turbos
there is no way you're going to be able to hide a sc

(edit) no way you're going to be able to hide a sc on a budget, that money would be better off going into doing internals like headwork, bigger cams, bored, stroked, etc...

How about buy a electric sounding blow off valve for the badarse street cred... Or just do the legal(?) thing and gut your cars weight to.improve performance.

I think with some clever planning you could mount a small S/C (Toyota SC12/14??) where the air con compressor fits??
That with thoughtful piping would be quite hidden.
Maybe NOT??

Though would be still highly Illeagal

The problem you face is more about predicting the knowledge of the police officer. I know some who wouldn't know the difference between an Air conditioner and a Turbo. So really it would come down to pot luck. No mater what you do, if I was the police officer I'd always pick a FI MX5.

So, you best bet is to avoid any reason for inspection.... Eg keep the rest of the car standard - hard to do when you turbo the car but keep stock wheels, height, no roll bar, etc....

I'm going to bite the bullet and be the old man here, despite being one of the youngest members of the forum. (I'm 18.)

Even if you've only just got your license, you'll only be on your P's for three years. My recommendation would be to spend at least most of that time doing supporting mods before you go forced induction. That's the better way to go about modifying your car anyway, even if you ignore the obvious legal implications. Start out by doing stuff like springs/shocks, sway bars, chassis bracing, diff upgrades etc and maybe do some cheap and cheerful intake and exhaust mods and then once the car is actually ready to take all that extra power you can look at forced induction. At that point you might be almost or completely off your P's and stealth might not be so much of an issue.

I am also a P plater.

I probably have the most illegal daily driver on this forum, Its probably in the top few percent quickest dailys also.

But im going to agree with paul. Thats how I did it. And I dont regret a thing.

Dont forget you will need to do clutch, diff, possible gearbox, ecu, injectors, brakes and suspension before you even consider buying a manifold. How fast do you want it to go. Ie do you want it as quick as an XR6....XR8? WRX? Tell us how quick it needs to go in a straight line and we can better help you with the required upgrade path.

Mount a turbo under the car near the diff, and run the intake pipe back up to the engine bay to poke up into the bottom of the standard air box with metal piping fed up through the stock intake tubing. It works, but I didn't say it would be easy  It would be low boost, and use a small turbo, no air to air intercooler (although might be able to cram a barrel water to air in somewhere under the car). You'll only need to use small diameter piping which will make it simpler to fit and also help keep gas velocities up, minimising lag...

Oh, and I've also seen turbo's mounted in the boot if under the car doesn't appeal.

For street use, the easiest cheapest most reliable way is just to use a wet nitrous kit.

Its FAR cheaper than any forced induction anything ever.

So what if it's cheaper?? :?

Nitrous is a total nuisance and is good for quarter mile runs only, not on the street. You've always "just run out" when you want it, you have to prime it, store a largish bottle in the car. There is a limit to where you can buy the stuff... Not practical at all for powering up a street car. With forced induction you can go for a 300km drive through the country, plant the foot whenever you like and get the same power the whole way. You're nitrous bottle will be empty after the same drive if you want the power hit which you would get every time with F.I on the same run.

A minute per hp per pound right?

So a ten pound bottle gets you 100hp for a minute straight yeah?

I meant for someone who just wants to feel manly in his mx5 at the traffic lights, nitrous is your answer.

And its cheaper.

And its NAWZ!

Maybe just wait until you can have a turbo, so you don't invalidate your insurance. Please tell us you have third party at least or do you expect every other driver to be fully covered to pay for the damage the "i can drive and am not an idiot" drivers have just like all of us.
