Flocking we all know is for interior items ie boot liners, cubby interiors , gloveboxes and the like. Anyone of course is free to do what they like but I cannot think of a styling cue for this from any sporting car. The dash set up on the MX5 is a good one- the nacelle is a tried and proven style used on many sporting cars and moulded plastics are very functional materials. Flocking is still used for oem ( not expensive) but you need a special process to do it. Flocking is also not really very durable as many boots will attest.

just came across this topic..

we get a bit of stuff flocked through work.. usually insides of glove box's cubby holes etc..
it is quite cheap and a pretty durable finish for what it is.

it would be perfect for the gauge hood on an mx5 to stop the horrid glare it gives off in almost all weather conditions.
I was going to do it but got a dash mat instead that also covers some gauges mounted on the dash.

if anyone is interested in some more info or pricing let me know.

Dredging up an old topic, has anyone in WA had some flocking done in their car? Was thinking about doing it for the instrument cowl but I want to have a feel of it first. There's only one shop I found on Yellow pages and they're in Kelmscott, would rather not go down that way..

I remember a few on Perth-WRX had this done by H-Tek Ultimate Flock Coating Kelmscott

Apparently is still is about $150 or a bit more if you need the dash repaired first.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

-as far as I know is not achievable as a diy. It is quite widely used for car boots and inside of gloveboxs , cubbies etc. It's an electrostatic process and not really intended for class A surfaces.OEM uses - check out the boot liner on the MX5. It does hide moulding marks and provides insulation and sound deadening. It is certainly not intended nor is it appropriate for dashboards - it would be regarded as a styling no go.

Do a google search on the Australian Classic Small Ford Forum. A few guys there have done some DIY flocking. The materials are pretty cheap and they've achieved some great results. There are a few long threads there that cover the pitfalls. Good luck
With two laps to go then the action will begin, unless this is the action, which it is.

Something needs to be done to stop the dash reflection from the dial hood.
I'm thinking of trying sticky-back black rubber foam from Clarks but don't know how to mould it around the top neatly...

IMO that would look atrociously tacky and try hard.
