rough guide to fixing a paint run

after priming the boot lid on friday i thought i might show you how to rub out a paint run. in this picture i spray three wet coats within a minute, not long after the 90cm run appeared

Image

to repair this paint run properly you must let it dry thoroughly. i gave this about 12 hours. to keep an eye on the repair wotk i gave it a quick s[pray with the gloss black paint

Image

next step. out with the 320 wet/dry sanpaper. bowl of water with a few drops of dish washing detergent and a couple of minutes later i was over half way through the rub out. this was a pretty bad run as the photo shows

Image

paint run has been completely rubbed out and first coat of primer applied

Image

final coat of primer and the paint repair completed. all it needs now is a rub back with 600 wet/dry and on with the top coat.

Image

from start to the finish. total time about 30 minutes. plan to paint it on monday

hopefully this little exercise might help some-one in trouble out. paint runs can and do happen so be prepared.

thanks borked - glad you enjoyed the read and will keep your mate in mind for any future projects.

there has been no progress on painting over the past couple of days - it's been too windy and too cold with temp hovering at a low 11 degrees

bit of work done today. painted around the windscreen sills and lhs door and sills.

tomorrow . hose down the pergola floor area and wrap the pergola walls in sheet plastic. full rub down on the body panels with 600 wet/dry sandpaper. engine bay, interior and boot cavity wraped in plastic sheeting to reduce possible overspray. panels :D wiped over again with grease/wax remover and it's ready to paint the rolling body.

decided to give the boot a top coat prior to placing it on the body for the full re spray

Image

picked up the large gun filled it with top coat. about half through the spraying exercise out sprayed some grey primer and splattered the boot lid.
might be hard to see but it's there. i could have kept spraying but that would be a poor attempt job.

Image

Image

so it's end of the spray session today. lesson, if you don't clean out your equipement properly you will pay the price. tomorrow it's back to the 600 wet/dry to rub out this rubbish/mess - then do iut properly.

Is it just me, or does this shot of the car, without the bumpers, make it look like an NC?

Image

Possibly because the rims look similar to OEM NC rims?

That was my thought as well - was more the lack of overhangs for me, and the wheels completed it.

Looking good so far Graham!
