Clearly from your description the oil level was very low, but HLA ticking noise in the NA6 & NA8 is more commonly due to other factors. In other words, the oil level can be fine & HLAs can still be noisy.

Hope the fix is a cheap & simple one.

I changed the oil immediatley after using the suburu cleaner.
Then every start up afterwarda for the next 8 months would look like a fire extinguisher went off in the garage.
Maybe a co-incidence?

Was told it was most likely the valve stem seals or a stuck oil control ring.
Was warmed up it was fine.

So as most of you may have guessed... from what i can gather anyway - the piston rings are gone and possibly also the valve guides/seals which may have been caused by the subi cleaner ripping off all the solidified deposits which mated to the rings and seals as a result of 11 years neglegence. It may also be due to the simple fact that i gave it a hard go over the last 2-3 months which it most likely was not used to. (i doubt it ever new what >3000 RPM was)

I have put 20-50w oil in for the moment. It has slowed the oil buring process, however the car still blows smoke finatically on cold startup...a new motor is well and truly on the horizon.

Lessons to be learnt: Dont use subi cleaner on a motor you know has been neglected

I still havent done a compression test yet, im keen to find out if all cylinders are working properly or not.

took out all the spark plugs today, cylinder 1 spark plug was covered in oil even after not being dríven for 2 days..

It is well and truly f***ed lol.
