So, other than emissions, does anyone know of any impacts to the engine by removing it?
Also, why is it solenoid controlled? What causes the ecu to activate it?

Re: Purge canister?
Also been researching. There is a number of threads on miata.net. Depends on what you do in the removal.
If you just join the lines the purge valve still works, but the canister won't sponge the fuel fumes up when the valve is closed.
This could cause either pressurised tank, or venting of tank leading to fuel smell and "smog". apparently fuel vaporisation from unsealed tanks is the cause of up 20 % of the smog generated.
Opinions are divided on if the tank will pressurise or it a check valve will prevent excessive pressures.
Other potential issues are vacuum leaks / high fuel vaporisation rate if system is not plugged/reconnected.
The valve opens when engine is warm and at light load so peak emissions numbers are not effected.
obdII ecu may give check engine light if no vacuum in the purge system at the time the ecu checks.

Re: Purge canister?
I removed mine from my SE and now get the P0443 CEL and have been trying to figure out how to eliminate it with little success.
To learn about the purge control functionality from official Mazda sources:
1. Download this Mazda zipped tech guide: http://www.mediafire.com/file/mjj0mtizbz2/Tech.zip
2. Unzip it
3. Read the "emission system.pdf" and "ENGINE PERFORMANCE On-Board Diagnostic.pdf" files (scroll down to the P0443 section in that last one).
Note: The zip file is for MAZDASPEED Miatas (known as SEs in Australia) but much of it will apply to NAs and NBs.

Re: Purge canister?
removed it on my NA6, make sure you join the two pipes at the base near the engine block, and leave the controls plugged in with no hoses attached to avoid engine check issues.

Re: Purge canister?
For me, it was to clean up the engine bay - wasn't worth the hassle.
